Young Japanese Lovers Not Making Out In Cars

Postby Mulboyne » Wed Jan 30, 2008 5:14 pm

[floatl]Image[/floatl]Asahi: Interest wanes in cars, once a must-have for young people
The dreams of a typical young man used to resemble a scene in a movie or a TV commercial. His gorgeous girlfriend (real or imaginary) would be sitting shotgun in his car, her long black hair flowing in the wind as he flashes a toothy smile and shifts gear along a seaside highway. Pedestrians and other motorists would stop and gape in awe at the man's girlfriend--and his wheels. Nowadays, the girlfriends may still be there, as are the romantic trips to the seashore. But the girlfriend's hair now is more likely to be blown by the air conditioning in a train. The car, once a must-have for young men, has lost its luster as a status symbol... The downward trend is well documented in government and industry statistics. According to a family budget survey by the internal affairs ministry, car purchases, gas fees and other vehicle-related expenses have dropped markedly among younger generations...A survey by the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA) also found that the ratio of those who do not own a car jumped from 21.3 percent in 2001 to 32.1 percent in 2005 among men in the first half of their 20s...Another survey last year shocked the auto industry because it showed that young people have lost interest in cars--and not just because of the costs...More than half of the respondents said cars were "simply a means of transportation," while only 6.7 percent said they were a "must-have" item for dating...more...

I guess that most of the people polled were city people, since cars are still very important and popular here in the sticks. But if you also look at the prohibitive cost of owning a car in Japan, I can understand why a lot of young people don't want one. When you add up all the insurance both mandatory and optional, the mandatory safety check(shaken), the yearly car tax, not to mention the sky high gasoline. If I could get away without owning a car, I might try, but public transportation is so piss poor here in Hachinohe, it might not be doable.

for city dwellers, a car may be nice to have but probably not an absolute necessity. out here in the sticks of shimane too, if you don't have a car, you're pretty much screwed for going anywhere within the same day.

sure.. i could take the train to matsue from where i live, but it would take in excess of 3 hours versus a 45 minute drive. screw that. i can get away with biking or walking if i'm staying in town but outside of that, transportation alternatives are basically non-existent.

In nagoya, the transport is pretty good. I use public transport for work every day. However, at the weekends I tend to use my car whenever we go anywhere. Thinking about it, having a car here is more a commodity. I could easily live my life without many restrictions, where I to give up the car. It would also leave me with more money I guess.

I can say two things about this.
1. The decline in the number of Japanese people having sex, in general.
2. The stay at the nearest love hotel is cheaper than a car rental.

Why be so 1930s? It's not that hard to get ahold of urea and prostaglandin....mix it up, shoot it up the snizz, and presto, she's not preggers anymore.
