Kosher Karate

Postby Mulboyne » Mon Feb 04, 2008 9:26 am

[floatl]Image[/floatl]Haaretz: Kosher karate
"When I pray my kavana (intent) and my concentration are above average, because I train in tora dojo," says Ari Fuld, a resident of Efrat in the West Bank, a third dan in the unique martial art form known in the United States as the "Jewish karate." Tora dojo is a method that combines "hard," sharp Japanese karate with "soft" Chinese martial arts, which focus on inner strength and flowing movement...At a time when the trend in martial arts is forgoing the spiritual aspect in favor of the most effective fighting techniques, tora dojo, which started within the American Jewish community, stands out..."This is a Jewish discipline in the familial, traditional sense," adds Fuld, noting that three of his four children train. "After all, Judaism is about traditional learning and teaching, because something important is lost or eradicated with every change. This is also the case in the Chinese-Japanese world, and this is how we train, with much respect for the method"...The method's name is a play on words: "Tora" sounds like Torah but also means "tiger" in Japanese...more...

pbm,

Being the martial arts expert that you undoubtedly are, what exactly is so fucked up about this pic? And as I'm sure that you have attained grand master status in the discipline that you so diligently study, could you please enlighten me as to how you are able to ascertain the quality of a dojo by merely looking at a photograph?

I humbly await your response...

I don't know enough to judge the quality of their karate from one pick, but they sure won't cut it in any synchronized sports events :D

I haven't heard of Tora dojo before. However, I have heard of Krav Maga, and I suppose there is a difference between the two. Krav Maga is used by the Israeli military and police and is a lethal technique. You can also take Krav Maga classes all over the US and Europe, and it's open to everyone.

It aint no Muay Thai Gym, no Muay Thai Gym's where im heading to in Japan *sigh*.
Dont really dig the whole Karate punching air every lesson and it works in theory but not to good in real life. Could be wrong, only my general observation of the stuff i see over here in Aus.

I prefer Muay Thai, BJJ works really well but i have never done any of it. My mate does alot of BJJ and is really good at it along with Muay Thai.

Anyone here do Kyokushin? Might start doing that when i get over there bare knuckle bad ass fighting.

I used to do a bit and my brother is fairly into it. There is not a lot of bare knuckle stuff except in high level competition. Lots of training though - mind/body stuff. Leave the agro at home please.

even white belt competition follows the "bare knuckle" set up. I was a white belt when i first competed. Of course, in the dojo gloves are worn.

Kyokushin guys are tough. It's one of the few syles of karate where people actually learn how to fight. They do develop one bad habit though. Since they don't punch to the face, they don't tend to guard their face very well from punches.

Ok, I'll stop messin' with you. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and here is mine:

saying that one style / system is the better than another is a bit like saying that Italian food is better than French food or that Australian wine is better than N.Z. wine.

The point is that although we can make certain generic observations about, say Australian wine, we also must accept that there is a lot of variation in the types of Ozzie wine being sold. it depends on the bottle that you are talking about.

So it is with martial arts. There are some excellent Kyokushin fighters going around. So too with other karate styles. I certainly wouldnt want to go to ground with a proficient BJJ dude, many of them have the grappling corner of the market well covered. But there is also a lot variation within each system. Some Karate guys I have seen walking around couldnt box chocolates. And some lads telling everyone that they 'know' BJJ couldnt take down a christmas tree, let alone a proficient stand up brawler.

What I am trying to say is that it often depends on the individual rather than the fighter. A style / system isnt going to "win" a fight. A fighter is. When I hear people saying that karate doesnt work in the "real world" and all that jazz, I kind of laugh. There is, like most things, an small, context specific, element of truth in the criticism. But for every 10 people who say such things, I recon 8 of them would have a hard time dealing with a highly proficient karate practitioner. You cant grapple with an opponent who has already knocked you out.

In short, this arguement is a bit like saying rugby is tougher than NFL or that Beckam is a more athletic dude than Carl Lewis. Its pointless.

Having said that, I recon there would be a few lads really happy to have Luke walk in the doors of our dojo (goju ryu) and teach them "how to keep their hands up". It would be a really educational experience indeed.;)

Just my two yens worth.

I agree,

I was not saying any forms of marital arts are lesser then others, just some of the Karate school's I have seen in my local area are pathetic. They remind me of some Billy Blank videos, the teachers should be shot for stealing their student’s money.

I personally would not be jumping in the ring with any BJJ guy's. I know 90% of the time they will take you down, next thing you know is you’re stuck in an arm bar / triangle and your fading off to la la land or tapping out.

Personally I don’t like BJJ, it work's and is an excellent martial art, but I just don’t enjoy it. My best mate Aaron does BJJ nearly everyday and I have seen first hand how effective it is. I enjoy Muay Thai and since I won’t be able to find any school's where I am heading I will just take up Kyokushin if I still have the urge to learn it.

Asking me to come to your dojo is like saying, come to our gym and fight Thailand champion John Wayne Parr, two very different fighting styles. I can’t remember who Wayne went up against but it was some BJJ guy and he got taken out in the 2nd round I believe, he had no chance. But he only had 6 weeks of BJJ training and took home $50,000 for showing up.

I respect BJJ but i am not interested in it.

whatever!!!

Postby PINK-STEEL » Wed Feb 06, 2008 12:21 pm

I've read this thread and had a good chuckle, I must admit.

Luke, mate, you come across as a someone who is lost in his own little universe! Who really gives a fuck which martial arts is the most effective, best or whatever? As long as what you do gives you a hard on, that's fine..doesn't matter if it turns others soft! Am I wrong?

I've been doing karate for 25 (mostly Kyokushin) years, cross-trained in other bits and pieces, got in the kickboxing ring (in Brisbane, actually) when I was younger, so I know what I'm talking about. BJJ (Blow-Jobs Jap-style???), Kyokushin, whatever, nothing beats a fucking hard head butt to the nose to break it, then a nice stomp on the knee-cap to really fuck someone's day up if they get mouthy!! Again, am I wrong?

If you are heading over this way, come and show my boys how to keep their hands up. We have the current world champ for one of the Kyokushin factions in our dojo, so I'm sure he'll be keen to learn from you almighty wisdom!!!

KJ,

I would say that style does matter if practicioners of a particular style tend to train in an ineffective way. There are karate schools where people do a lot of hard sparing and those guys tend to be tough. Kyokushin and Goju-ryu come to mind as two styles with a lot of tough practicioners. It's because they train hard. However, if all you ever do is punch and kick air and kata, you'll be in for a wake up call if you ever have to use what you've learned. Same goes for BJJ guys that only ever train on the ground and never do take downs.

The other thing people should remember is that no matter what they train in, a big tough street thug will probably take them out. Especially if he has a knife ;)

Above comment is very true, hence why i wanted to learn Muay Thai.
It seemed to me that it taught a lot of skills i could use effectively and if need be outside of the gym.

25 Years of training and your key to success is a head butt and a knee stomp......simply amazing.

Well, actually 25 years of training as taught me to one thing: minimum time, maximum damage!!!! However, saying that, I can walk the walk brother and do all the fluffy things too!!! So, again, I invite you with open arms, and in the spirit of Budo, to come down and train with me and the boys!!!

No ill-feelings intended. If you want a genuine intro to Kyokushin when you get over here, PM me and I'll help you out where I can!!!

But remember, it won't be anything like Miyagi-san or the Cobra-Kai. Oops, you are probably a bit young for that classic documentary on good, efffective martial arts.
