Gaijin wife-beaters?

Postby amdg » Sun Feb 03, 2008 5:14 pm

So I was sitting around eating lunch with the secretaries, as I do every Wednesday just to keep up with whats happening around the office. (You can't beat the secretaries for office gossip) and the subject of marrying a foreigner comes up. One of the secretaries says it would be OK, maybe, but her greatest concern would be domestic violence. The other girls all nod their heads in agreement.

Huh?

Has the anti-gaijin propaganda machine been busy again, or is this an old thing? Have foreigners always had a rep for being wife-beaters or what? It was news to me. Just like the 'foreigners have soft dicks' meme. Oh yeah? Soft dick? Well then you won't mind so much when I STICK IT UP YOUR ASS. :D
Mr Kobayashi: First, I experienced a sort of overpowering feeling whenever I was in the room with foreigners, not to mention a powerful body odor coming from them. I don't know whether it was a sweat from the heat or a cold sweat, but I remember I was sweating whenever they were around.

Probably Korean husbands made the image of foreiger ones worse. It is notorious for K-husband to beat his wife.
And We think only white dudes have limp dick, not mongoloid foreigers and the other ones.

There was a discussion on the NBR Forums recently about international marriages where data showed that Japanese male/other Asian female couples were more common than the usual image of white guy/Japanese girl. Here's data from 2000:

Total marriages: 798,138, of which:
Japanese husband-Foreign wife: 28,326
Foreign husband-Japanese wife: 7,937
total mixed marriages: 36,263 or 4.5% percent

Origin of non-Japanese spouses:

Foreign-born wife:
China 34.9%
Philippines 26.5
Korea 21.9%
Thai 7.5%
Brazil 1.3%
USA 0.7%
Other 7.1%

Foreign-born husband:
Korea 31.6%
USA 18.7%
China11.1%
Brazil 3.5%
UK 3.1%
Other 32%

Some provisional 2006 data put the total number of international marriages that year at 44,701 or 6.1% of the total with 12,150 Japanese men/Filipina couples.

Separately, some people contributed anecdotes about the apparent high incidence of domestic violence in the case of brokered marriages between farmers and Filipinas. Others on the board protested that there was no hard data to back up whether such marriages were actually more likely to lead to domestic violence but, if the anecdotal evidence does have some real foundation, then its possible that some survey somewhere indicated a higher overall level of DV in "marriages with a foreigner". Your lunch partners may have heard something about that and drawn the wrong conclusion. Alternatively, they may just have heard from a friend about a foreign husband who is free with his fists. You could always ask unless you are worried about disturbing the wa.

Incidentally, not only is that data old, many pointed out that it doesn't include marriages overseas which are nor registered at a Japanese ward office. It also includes marriages between zainichi Koreans and Japanese which few inside and outside Japan would regard as a true international marriage.

A case of perception versus reality? Of the two spousal abuse cases that I am personally familiar with one was a Japanese married to a enlisted U.S. Marine and the other was a Japanese married to a Japanese.

I did find this:

According to a nationwide government survey in 2000, 27.5 percent of Japanese wives said they had been beaten by their husbands, and 4.6 percent of women in another study said spousal abuse had put them in a life-threatening situation. (Estimates of domestic violence against women in the US vary widely, but tend to range from less than 1 percent to a little more than 3 percent, according to the Family Violence Prevention Fund.)
Experts and activists argue, however, that since many Japanese still regard violence against women not as a violation of their human rights but as a "family matter" - a quarrel between husband and wife - the actual number of cases in that country is probably much larger than reported.

Does this include the white-trash trailer park guys in the wife-beater T-shirts? I'm sure in you exclude inbreeding as a cause for DV, teh rates would plummet even more. But, it the above numbers are true....Ganbare Nippon!

Interesting how the majority of int'l marriages are between Japanese men and foreign women, but the gaijin man/Japanese woman dynamic gets so much more attention. Why is that?

shit down here its seems to be an Island past time to get drunk off of Awamori and beat your wife. My neighbors (Okinawan) go at it at least once every two to three days. The police are called and they tell you that it is a family mater so they can't do anything about it.
I gave up sex, swearing, and smoking- it was the most horrifying 30 seconds of my life

The latest census figures released Wednesday by Statistics Canada show that, on this side of the border, mixed unions are forming at unprecedented rates.
There were 289,420 mixed-race couples, married and common law, in 2006 – one third more than in 2001, the last time the data was collected. . .

. . . The Japanese are most likely to enter a mixed union, the census showed, at 74.7 per cent. The second and third groups most likely to be involved in an interracial relationship are Latin Americans (47 per cent) and blacks (40.6 per cent). . .

The sad part is she probably went home to him and accepted whatever BS excuse he came up with for doing it.

For one, we're more visible. A J-C or J-K couple walking down the street doesn't stand out while westerners do. And going by those numbers, it looks like Western guy/J-girl couples outnumber J-guy/Western girl couples by about 5 to 1.

Beyond that, we're getting into cultural perceptions and insecurities, i.e., nonsense pulled out of my ass.
