The Greatest Structure of all Time !!

Postby Buraku » Wed Feb 06, 2008 11:23 pm

and Japan is partially responsible
the immense structure of biggest volume
the largest, most defining thing ever created by mankind and Japan has helped create it....

what is it ?

The Pyramids ?
Atlantis ?
Empire State Building ?
The Golden Gate Bridge ?
Colossus of Rhodes ?
Great Wall of China ?

The world's rubbish dump: a garbage tip that stretches from Hawaii to Japan

The "soup" is actually two linked areas, either side of the islands of Hawaii, known as the Western and Eastern Pacific Garbage Patches. About one-fifth of the junk – which includes everything from footballs and kayaks to Lego blocks and carrier bags – is thrown off ships or oil platforms. The rest comes from land......
....Syringes, cigarette lighters and toothbrushes have been found inside the stomachs of dead seabirds, which mistake them for food.

In the Navy, we throw all of our trash into the pacific. It's crazy, but it's mostly limited to paper and food items, though there's plenty of other crap chucked off illegally too.:wink4:

On the West Coast, we throw all our Navy trash onto ships in the Pacific.

Funny you should ask. We actually have an Iowa Navy, consisting of one battleship, located in Des Moines. It's a great story.

Long ago when the Battleship Iowa was decommissioned, the US Navy donated a huge model to the State of Iowa, which was ensconced in the State Capitol. But a few years later, the Navy decided to take the battleship out of mothballs, and they wanted their model back.
So the State Legislature passed a law creating the Iowa Navy, of which the 1/48th scale battleship is the flagship, so any attempt to seize the flagship would be considered an act of war. The law was fought in the courts, but the Feds finally gave up. So we are the only state with our own Navy (of sorts). And here it is:

If you want petty, I'd go after the Navy for being trying to take back a gift.

The model of the battleship is the top tourist attraction at the State Capitol, when it was unveiled, there were lines to see it for weeks. People sure as hell wouldn't go to the Capitol to watch our boring, useless Legislature.

I was of course joking, but that's kind of neat. The USS Iowa was of course a prominent capital ship during WWII and on! I would even consider going and seeing it, or actually, having them move it to Illinois would be better!

Ah, I should have posted a link to the site where I ganked that pic. So here is the link, there are lots more pics. It really is incredibly detailed, it must have cost a small fortune to create, you can see why people would fight over it.

If they lost the ship what else would there be for the tourists to see in Iowa? (unless you have a corn fetish)

The two big tourist sites in Iowa are the "Field of Dreams" and "Bridges of Madison County" locations. This is even true of Japanese, sometimes I tell them I'm from Iowa and they have no idea until I mention those movies. Actually, the Field of Dreams location was a real farm field, after filming they reverted it back to corn until so many tourists came by to see it (and it wasn't there) and they figured out they ought to put the baseball diamond back and start making money off it.
Unfortunately, some drunken teenagers torched several of the wooden bridges (there were only like a dozen) and they've never been rebuilt.
