Army Wife in Tokyo

I Found this interesting account of Army dependents move to Tokyo shortly after the war. This woman's account is from December 1, 1946.

"I don't care how much I loved my husband, I wouldn't follow him to a heathen country like Japan!" the lady bus driver in Galveston had announced stoutly.

It reads like propaganda. Hurry to Japan, a land of plenty... servants waiting on you hand and foot... a luxurious life free of want... "This is a vacation. I feel like a lady of leisure. I'm actually more rested and happier than I was back home." Sounds like the military was trying to encourage a mass exodus of military wives into Japan. Most likely the military was trying to clamp down on immoral behavior of GIs by re-introducing the civilizing comforts of American domestic life. The good old days of whoring it up and living with your "moose" would have to come to an end once the wives started showing up.

Probably was to a degree. Remember, they had a lot of the "evil empire" propaganda used during the war to overcome. However, those that were able to bring wives to Japan did enjoy that sort of a livelihood, which was not available to them anywhere in the states.

with your "moose"

Love that term! Actually, I've only heard that used by FGs in the Misawa area to describe those delightful "daughters" that so naturally produce the incurable YBF virus!
