"Land of Borat" Kazakhstan shines in Oscar limelight


A Kazakh-financed film has been nominated for best foreign film at this year's Oscars, a welcome creative boost to this central Asian country that was so heavily lampooned by the hit "Borat" movie...
"Mongol", submitted by Kazakhstan in the Foreign Language Film category for the 80th Academy Awards, was made by a Russian director and stars Japanese, Mongol and Chinese actors.

The Borat film, which portrayed Kazakhstan as a nation of horse urine-drinking racists, was nominated for best screenplay at 2007 Oscars but didn't win.

Anyone interested in collaborating on a film which portraits Japan as a nation of schoolgirl-urine-drinking racists?

Director Sergei Bodrov's "Mongol" is a story about survival and war tracing the early life of Mongol conqueror Genghiz Khan, played by Japanese actor Tadanobu Asano.


The movie was actually quite good. I thought I recognized the lead but couldn't be sure since I never figured out what language they were speaking (though the Chinese characters spoke Chinese).
I especially loved seeing the Chinese portrayed as mercenary and corrupt, which is how they were at the time.
It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming...

And needless to say, Genghiz Khan's soldiers are the origin of ugly, uncivilized, and evil Mordor's orcs in The Lord of the Rings.

I've seen Tadanobu Asano in a number of films, he's quiet good in some Dramas, Action flicks and Comedy but he's also helped make a few stinkers. I wonder if he's Oscar worthy material, will he receive critical acclaim ? then again what the fuck do these guys know ? Most of the Academy Awards people spend their weeks with heads up their own ass.
