These type of exercises are held quite frequently, but lately not in Okinawa.....

Ahh it warms my heart to see my coonass bretheren freezing their ass off. :D

Camp Zama's weather is a lot closer to Shreveport (and my home of West Monroe) than Niigata is right about now. However I did have to spend a month in Hokkaido. Now that was really friggin' cold!

But this is a nice change of pace for an NG unit that has seen WAY too much combat time. Good for them.

Silly question, but why is the US flag always displayed backwards on uniforms as shown in these pics?

It's always portrayed as if the flagpole would be forward. It isn't backwards, it's just seen from the "other side." If they wore the flag patch on their other shoulder, it would be the other way around.

That's part of it Charles. It is placed as the flag would appear if it was carried while the individual was marching in formation. It is also only worn on combat uniforms and is infrared viewable, for quick identification.

Well, that's what I was trying to say. The flagpole would be forward and the stripes following, if the individual was carrying the flagpole. I wondered about that myself a while ago and looked it up.
Now what I'm wondering is why the usual nonmilitary representations of the flag have the star field on the left and the stripes on the right. Don't know how I'd research that.

I didn't word it well either, but the military reason is because in the days when the troops carried the flag into battle it always flew in the wind and when flying in the wind when being carried it flies "backward" so this symbolizes carrying the flag in battle!

You're exactly right on the wall placement and other that that being set out in the federal flag protocols, I couldn't even speculate as to the reason why.

Yeah, we're both getting at the same thing. The flag follows the troops advance. If it was the "conventional" image, the flag would be flying against the direction of advance, it would symbolize the troops in retreat.

Anyway, the best I can figure for the conventional flag image is using the same logic, the flagpole leads. So it might be said the flag advances to the west. Maybe that is symbolic of the westward expansion of the US from the original 13 colonies. Or perhaps it is a symbol of the wind coming from the west (whatever that means).

Looks to be just a matter of custom.

wiki (for what its worth)
"Flag illustrations generally depict flags flying from the observer's point of view from left to right, the view known as the obverse (or "front"); the other side is the reverse (or "back"). There are some exceptions, notably some Islamic flags inscribed in Arabic, for which the obverse is defined as the side with the hoist to the observer's right."

All right all you Yanks! How do you display the Union Jack on the wall? The Japanese always blow this, or at least the ones in my office do!

I think Jack made another thread about that? ;-)

Re the Union Jack, I thought this protocol was interesting...

On Vehicles
When flags are painted onto a vehicle, for example on the tail fin of an
aircraft, the flag on the port side should show the obverse of the flag (ie. the flagpole on the left), while that on the starboard side should show the reverse (ie. the flagpole on the right). On surfaces perpendicular to the direction of travel the obverse of the flag should be shown.

On Uniforms
When shoulder patches of the National Flag are used on uniforms the flag on the left shoulder or sleeve should show the obverse of the flag (ie. the flagpole at the wearer’s front). If it is considered necessary to have a patch on the right shoulder or sleeve it should show the reverse of the flag (ie. still with the flagpole at the wearer’s front).

Oh yeah, there's a left and right and an up and down. The white diagonals are different widths.

Right about now, most Americans should display it like this:

But this way is also acceptable, I guess:

On a related note, here is the "United Blue States of America Flag" I created after Bush hijacked the 2000 election.

Image

Out of the stripes representing the Original 13 states, I removed the stripes representing Red States, and left only enough stars to represent the Blue States. I used this as the logo of my blog for a long time.

In the Valley of Elah

has a bit in it where Tommy Lee Jones stops outside the local school to show an immigrant janitor from El Salvador that hes putting it upside-down (sign of distress) & how to do it correctly.

It's an anti-war movie & a pretty decent one at that.

If George Bush Sr. had gotten an anti-flag desecration law passed, I wonder what kinds of actions would be illegal in the case of this flag...
