PT109 comes to mind. According to Wikipedia, the Amagiri is the destroyer that cut it in half.

The antii-military contingent in the diet was demanding to know why this destroyer equiped with the latest expensive, they emphasized expensive, aegis equipment and radar systems was unable to spot the fishing boat.

Now, we talking early in the morning, they don't say whether it was even light yet (or foggy), a 16 to 18 foot boat, probably maybe of wood and fiberglass. This kayak is probably not going to show up on any systems, or maybe appear to be a log at best and these diet genius's are demanding immediate answers. I think they ought to put those diet members in the same size boat and float them in front of a destroyer under full steam and see if they can figure out what happened from there!

I don't recall seeing much fog this morning. And why couldn't an advanced system like this distinguish between a log and a boat?..

So, you're saying terrorists could ram this billion dollar machine with an 'explosive' fishing boat without being detected? Brilliant design!.. And this after the Cole..

It was early in the morning, maybe not yet light, there is usually fog or haze on the ocean, kinda like the view from your eyes in Roppongi in the morn.

Take five steps across your office and that is more or less the size of the fishing boat, which is probably made out of surfaces that have natural stealth.

Aegis destroyers aren't usually looking for paddleboats. They are designed for something a bit different.

A bad impression on the coffee table? ;-)

I think it's when you popped 10 Cialis beforehand and have been going at it for at least like 28 hours 31 minutes 14 seconds. You're scrapped raw, she's split in two, and you need to strap a mahogany 2 X 4 across your butt to keep from falling in?

I'm kinda getting old, so I'm kinda over and out in 10 seconds or 4 pumps, whichever comes first....no mahogany moments anymore, just balsa wood.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aegis_combat_system

Well, the aegis system is more designed as an overall fleet defense system and not as 'don't run into this' sort of thing. While radar systems usually don't read organic material very well, it may be a case that weapons systems folks knew about the boat, but since it wasn't a target to be destroyed and their job is not to steer the ship, they didn't do anything about. Even with all the tech in the world, with moving things, you still generally need someone to look out the window AND pay attention.

But that said, I'm sure the North Koreans are digging this, given that the Aegis system is the corner stone of Japan's ABM system to stop missiles from NK hitting Japan. Rather than develop expensive and technically challenging anti ABM countermeasures, apparently now they just need to a couple of fishing boats.

Thanks for the wiki link and clarification.. I understand the purpose of the Aegis, it just seems silly a ship like this can't avoid running into a boat in the ocean.. Because nobody saw it..

Back to reality, a boat that small has mobility and speed. The destroyer and any class of ship that size has the right of way in sea lanes over smaller vessels. A fishing boat because it is maneuverable is responsible for giving way to the larger vessel. Assuming the fishing boat was operational, it does not appear the destroyer would be in the wrong, unless the fisherman didn't have box cutters.

Having said that, TIJ and professional negligence travels a long way. The courts should be able to get a conviction of the Captain of the destroyer and whoever was at the helm and everyone will then be happy except the two fisherman with box cutters.

Actually, hitting a wee fishing boat in a rolling swell in the open ocean is actually very hard.

However, the best technique is to approach from downwind and, if possible, with the sun behind you.

With the lights off and then hit'em with the high beams when you're right on top of them, so they panic and can't move in time!

Hmmm. Sounds doable. I wonder how many police tests that will take to prove?

Well...

Asahi: Atago crew spotted fishing vessel earlier
Crew members on watch duty aboard the destroyer Atago spotted a fishing vessel 12 minutes before it was run over, but they may not have properly passed on that information, sources said. The first sighting of the Seitoku Maru fishing boat came at 3:55 a.m. Tuesday, before the Maritime Self-Defense Force warship rammed into the boat, breaking it in two, the sources said. Defense Ministry officials had previously said the Seitoku Maru was first seen at 4:05 a.m., two minutes before the collision... Crew members on watch duty aboard the Atago usually complete their shift at 4 a.m. Defense Ministry officials are looking into why evasive action was not taken earlier. They are also trying to determine if an inadequate transmission of such information may have prevented an avoidance of the collision... The Atago apparently tried to avoid a collision by moving in reverse without changing direction. Coast Guard officials questioned Atago members about where they were positioned at the time of the accident in an attempt to determine why the Atago was so close to the Seitoku Maru that the only way to avoid a collision was by going into reverse...more...

Yomiuri: Why couldn't Aegis ship avoid hitting a boat?
Couldn't the accident have been avoided even by a state-of-the-art Aegis destroyer?...Aegis-equipped vessels have the world's highest class of radar, which is capable of simultaneously tracking more than 100 missiles or airplanes. The Atago, which was inaugurated last March, is the newest among the five Aegis-equipped destroyers in the MSDF fleet. Its construction cost is staggering at about 140 billion yen. At the time of the accident, around 10 MSDF members, including those on lookout duty, were on the bridge. The water where the two vessels were traveling was calm and visibility was good.So why did the crew members fail to detect the fishing boat in time? Even a high-tech vessel cannot prevent an accident unless its crew members operate the ship properly and pay full attention to safety. It has been 20 years since an MSDF submarine collided with a pleasure fishing boat, leaving 30 people dead. The latest accident raises the question: Was it caused by slackness on the part of the Atago's crew members? Japan's security cannot be ensured if an Aegis-equipped destroyer fails to avert a collision with a fishing boat...more...

Yes it will be able to track 100 Nighthawks, 100 cruise missile etc etc and such other BS from that LM manual. LockMart are trying to make the ultimate sales pitch with this baby, they also got the ASAT stunt to brag about
so the sales will continue to go global and number into the billions$.
Theoretically it can track 100 objects at the same time in ideal conditions, but putting that into practice is a whole different matter.
