Yeah, this sounds familiar. It's happened 3 times this year to the washing machines in my apartment building, which are unfortunately located right outside the wall of my rooms. So when the machine goes berserk, I hear the banging immediately. And then I have to explain to the landlord how someone ELSE broke the washer.
Apparently the spindle that drives the rotation gets bent from being overloaded with an imbalanced load, it gradually gets worse because the spin cycle puts more force on the spindle, bending it further.
I always see the repairman taking the machine apart and working underneath it where the motor drives the spindle. I suspect my landlord got screwed buying cheap commercial washers that were guaranteed to need continuous repairs. Anyway, you'll need a repairman to fix this, and they'll certainly be well familiar with this sort of problem, it's quite common. I don't pay the repair bills but it looked like a fairly quick repair (as these things go).
Once it's repaired, avoid overloading the washer, or it will just happen again. Your clothes get cleaner in a smaller load anyway.

P.S. Yes, I do pay far too much attention to my laundering.

Call the company, it's usually the cheapest, and oftentime the only, option. They all have their own service centers and sub-contracted repairmen and they can get any necessary parts cheaper than anyone else.

Our washer breaks down in the same way at least once a year. Fortunately (?) they just had a problem with some of our model and had to come out and replace a circuit board where the buttons are for free because there was a danger of them starting a fire, so we have a brand spanking new warranty for our old ass washer.

It is definately caused by putting too much in there as well. My wife sort just haphazardly piles stuff in there and fills as far as she can. The actual amounts you are supposed to limit the washing machines (and dryers for that matter) here to are absolutely tiny.

Do you have a warranty? Generally, if you bought the machine new within the past year or two you can get the maker to repair it for free or at a minimal cost. Just phone up the shop that you bought it at and dig out your recept and warranty.

Muchos gracias, that's the kinda of pointless trivia I like. Can't wait to drop this on some poor unsuspecting soul and make them carry it around with them for the rest of their natural life, also.

Not me. I don't bathe, so I attempt to avoid anything with water in it, least it splash on me!

You might try the vendor if you bought it new, a lot of times their support people can tell you what's wrong, or fix it cheap since the warranty would have expired. Sometimes if it is an identifiable fault, or they adjudge that it was a poorly built machine, they will even fix it for free.

But, having said that, I should point out that a gal with all your big money should just toss it in the dump and buy a new one.
