I suggest setting aside money to do this the right way then. Doing a half-assed job is likely to end up with half-assed results. Half-assed results in this case probably means "no visa".

Calling immigration is very likely to be pointless. You need to speak to an attorney in Japan who specializes in immigration and visa issues.

Any reliable information is useful though.

The thing is though you have no way to know what is reliable and what is not. Also something that worked well 6 years ago (or even 6 months ago) could get you deported if you try it today. The reverse is also true -- something that would not have passed muster x months/years ago might be perfectly acceptable now. By not seeking current up-to-date advice from a professional you are not able to see the whole picture and learn what is actually possible (and what is not) at the current time.

You guys today like to make this a lot harder than it needs to be. Whatever happened to the old tried and true: marrying a local to get a visa. Piece of cake.
