Samurai Girl

[floatr]ImageImage[/floatr]Reuters: ABC Family picks up "Samurai Girl"
ABC Family has picked up "Samurai Girl," which the cable network plans to air as a "major programming event" consisting of three two-hour episodes. "Samurai," from ABC Studios, is set to start production in the spring in Vancouver and is slated to air over one weekend in August 2008. "Samurai," based on a series of popular young-adult novels, centers on a 19-year-old Japanese girl named Heaven (Jamie Chung) who discovers that the wealthy businessman who adopted her as an infant is really the head of the Yakuza (the Japanese mafia) and had her beloved brother brutally murdered. She breaks from her family and begins training to become a samurai, and with the help of a group of new American friends, sets out to take down her father's evil empire.

...about a Japanese girl named Heaven (Jamie Chung) ....

Oh, I can already hear the whining about Chinese playing Japanese parts.:p

...above the usual action/adventure series book, Sword is great for all audiences, but especially reluctant readers.

Book Description
When I was six months old, I dropped from the sky -- the lone survivor of a deadly Japanese plane crash. The newspapers called me Heaven. I was adopted by a wealthy family in Tokyo, pampered, and protected. For nineteen years, I thought I was lucky.

I'm learning how wrong I was.

They say your life begins on your wedding day.

Here's what happened on mine:

I lost the person I love most.

I learned that everything I knew about my family was a lie.

Now I'm being hunted. I must fight back, or die.

My life ended that day.

The old Heaven is gone.

I AM SAMURAI GIRL.

Sounds like someone decided to break out with the unused A-Team plotlines.

They already lined up Bai ling, Zhang Ziyi, and Michelle Yeoh to play Japanese women. Uncle Benny from Lethal Weapon 4 will be the yakuza oyabun. George Takei will play a Filipino Restaurant owner.

I can't wait to see the Samurai Girl, steeped in the mystiical art of Kung Fu, show the ancient ways of Japan ~ namely how to do Tai Chi and cook that most authentic of Japanese dishes, Sweet and Sour Chicken.

In 1972 a SAMURAI unit was sent to prison by a military court for a crime they didn't commit. These GIRLS promptly escaped from a maximum security stockade to the Los Angeles underground. Today, still wanted by the government, they survive as soldiers of fortune. If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire the .... SAMURAI GIRL ?
I broke a mirror this morning, which means I should be getting 7 years of bad luck - but my lawyer says he can get me 5.

They definitely need to work the guy who plays Ando from 'Heroes' in there too.. he's Korean and doesn't speak Japanese at all - apparently learns all his dialogue phonetically.

Each episode should have at least one allusion to George Takai being the first gay person of Japanese descent "to boldly go where no man has gone before."

Yup. That's why Kirk was always asking Sulu for warp factor ten.

Samurai Girl debuts tonight. Oh boy!
Image
While hoping to build on its summer success with "The Secret Life of the American Teenager," ABC Family doesn't draw blood with the opening adventure of "Samurai Girl" -- a six-hour, three-night adaptation of the young-adult novels. Think of this "A hero is awakened" story as a poor woman's "Kung Fu Panda," albeit with a much better-looking (and considerably less-appealing) lead. It's the sort of production rife with plenty of action but nothing that's remotely stirring, putting far too much pressure on petite Jamie Chung to carry the drama.

They lost me at "So that's why there are always crumbs on my bed"...
Also spotted the chinese names at the start, and though, oh, okay that's unusual... but gave it ago... That first line was enough to make me want to vomit, the next line when the girl spoke made me vomit...

No really, it did... but I think it was due partly to something I ate this morning... The show just threw me over the edge. ^O^

---

On that photo I've quoted... I'm no expert, but I think they're both douches if they think that attack is anywhere near effective.
