
The credibility of Eco Mark and other labels that claim to certify products as ecologically friendly have been shaken due to a recent series of scandals, including one involving the false labeling of ink, recycled paper and plastic materials. Nearly half of the items certified by Eco Mark are of the type involved in the scandals. "The credibility of Eco Mark that we have built up for nearly 20 years collapsed," said Shoji Miyagawa, chief of the planning department of the Japan Environment Association, with which the Eco Mark Office is affiliated.
