Well, if you take into account the name "Hillary", it's got two dreaded "l"s and and equally dreaded "r", so of course, Japanese don't want to sound stupid over the next four years, if Hillary were to win. Also, let's look at the last name, "Clinton", sounds like the word for "chestnut" (kinton), which while somewhat tasty, it sounds equally stupid to say, "Daitoryou Kurikinton", which....yeah, it's Friday..........

Hehe, all good points. "kinton" is actually mashed sweet potatoes, though chestnuts are often added in as an ingredient. If you katatanify Clinton it usually is "kurinton" (and "kuri" is, like you said, chestnuts). So there are two different ways to get chestnuts out of this name.

You inspired me to check the dictionary, and I learned a new word: "hirari" (usually followed by "to") is an adverb meaning "lightly; quickly; nimbly".

In southwestern Fukui Prefecture, there is Obama City (小浜市)....that's probably where they did the survey.

Welcome to the City of Obama, where 31,484 people (as of Dec. 1, 2007) live in an area of 232.86 km².

Hirari can also mean (slightly slangy)

1. Hilarious, funny, amusing

2. To dodge, jump over/under, avoid

p.s. one of the above is a lie

Obama, Japan

Obama, Japan, roots for accidental namesake

OBAMA, Japan (AFP) - Barack Obama, who has been credited with tapping support in unlikely places, is enjoying a groundswell of enthusiasm in a small city in western Japan, which is delighted to share his name.

Obama, Japan, is rooting for candidate Obama, hoping that if he becomes the US president he will put this ancient fishing town of 32,000 people firmly on the tourist map and, just maybe, choose it for an international summit.

My favorite quotes from the CNN article...

Tomoyuki Ueda, 40, a company worker dining at a restaurant serving the town's celebrated mackerel, said it would be healthy for the United States to elect its first African-American president. "I think both Obama and Hillary are qualified, but if Obama becomes president he could correct problems of racial discrimination," he said.

Seiji Fujihara, a head of the local tourism board, said he has only met a black person once, but believed Obama's election would make the United States "more equal" on racial issues.

This is exactly what I picked up on. The Japanese can hardly lay claim to moral authority on the issue of racial equality.

By the way, I'm glad more and more people are catching on to Obamania!

And like we ALL know there's no anti-female discrimination back here in the good ol' USA... don't we?

Oh, you mean when the word "assertive" is used to describe a male, it is often seen as a positive, and when it is used to describe a female it means that she's a bitch? Overly-assertive people all three genders are bitches, yeah...that goes for the transgenders, hermaphrodites, crossdressers, eunuchs, and Bobbit-ized folks out there, also.

I wouldn't mind "rooting" for Obama with the gal on the left.
Never criticize anyone until you've walked several kilometres in their shoes.
Because

1. You're now several kilometres away; and

2. You've got their shoes.

If that's the case, then Hillary should definitely run on the same ticket with Obama - as his VP!

I was just thinking.. If the Dems were smart, Hil and Bama would meet behind closed doors to discuss a shared ticket now. I think Hilary/Obama would set the Dems up for the future, and it would be something both of them might agree to..

They would both agree, for the time being, to direct most of their attacks toward McCain, forcing him to defend himself against two opponents. Drag this out until September, then make the 'dream team' announcement..

They should also say they will appoint the following to their cabinet:

- Colin Powell (I guess I can forgive him, but he's still a Carlyle crony)
- Warren Buffet (he could lend the US the money it needs)
- John McCain (saying if McCain loses, they'll use his experience in their cabinet if he's willing)

They would not lose with my guidance. :D

I guess Obama took note:

New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, whose presidential bid never picked up enough steam, backed Sen. Barack Obama for president yesterday ... Richardson, the nation's only Hispanic governor, told a rally in Portland, Ore., that Obama was an extraordinary leader who appeals to the best in Americans. ... The pair seemed very comfortable together, likely to increase speculation that Richardson would be a suitable vice presidential candidate.
