Mr Kobayashi: First, I experienced a sort of overpowering feeling whenever I was in the room with foreigners, not to mention a powerful body odor coming from them. I don't know whether it was a sweat from the heat or a cold sweat, but I remember I was sweating whenever they were around.

I actually hate watching Japanese, Korean, or Chinese people cooks because of the lack of hygiene. I had a Japanese roommate in college that would leave pots of curry out for days and act like I was the weird one by insisting that as long as he used my pot he was going to put the leftovers in Tupperware and refrigerate them. He also used to do things like throw a frozen block of ground beef in the microwave, thaw it enough to peel off the the outer later, and then pop the rest back in the freezer. Then of course he'd repeat that with the same block of meet the next day.

Anyway, the first time I saw a typical Japanese kitchen it was shocking. Actually the whole fucking house was shocking. Why do people live in such dumps here? Truly this is a nation of pack rats.

I've got you beat. The first kitchen I was ever inside of in Japan was in the all male dormitory for the football (american) team at a university. I've never seen so many insects indoors in my entire life.

And they said it couldn't be done. It was nice surfing without the constant fear of having my leg bitten off.

To be honest, once I started making it clear that I wanted to do something, my family has been more than accomodating, so I can't complain. It's just the initial "disruption" that I find bothersome, but that probably has more to do with me just taking things too personally, being relatively impulsive, and not liking to rock the boat too much.

Well, if you're so worried, don't go into the ocean, just come over to my house and use the pool.....

funny you should mention that. i've grown all but completely despondent with our current living arrangement, so much so that i moved my desk and a few other things over to my loft at my school. i now go back to the house literally to sleep and eat and little else. i can hardly stand being over there now.

Glad to hear things worked out and you managed to avoid getting your leg bit off by sharks and your head bit off by in-laws :D

Sorry to hear that man. Because of the in-laws?

For the house we are looking to build, I have laid things out so that the in-laws are limited to the 1st floor and the second is ours (they literally have no reason to come upstairs). The only space we really need to share on a normal basis is the kitchen, but even then separate fridges and food storage locations.

Of course, my parents in law being my parents in law, now that we have found a place that everyone can actually fucking agree on, my father in law has decided to have a full physical and based whether or not they will actually move in with us (more specifically, whether we will need the huge ass plot we are currently looking at and whether they will be kicking in money or not) on the results of that which we have to wait a frigging week for.

Like I mentioned above, I've already gone off on the parents in law (several times now at this point) and it won't take too much more for me to tell them all to eat me while I haul myself off to live cheaply in the wilds of Hokkaido.

:p

specifically my mother-in-law. i'm tired of looking at her fucking crap all over the place and having to navigate around it, half-obstructed doors, potted plants everywhere and her extremely disgusting habits, which i won't detail here.

we now have a bigass empty tsukemono bucket in our rapidly filling "extra" storage so now the whole fucking storage room stinks. i've tossed it outside which apparently pissed off mother-in-law. "good", i say. i've suggested to my wife that she politely mention that we give it back to its rightful owners but she tells me her parents have already said no. personally, i think she's lying.

i used to try to keep the upstairs of the house, which is mostly used by us, reasonably neat but have since given up on that too. i've been on my wife for literally years to help me get it cleaned up (and to drop 30lbs) but all i ever get from her is lip-service and half-assed attempts. i don't think the woman has ever finished anything she started.

all i need now is a sofa/bed and a unit bath and i'd really have no reason to go over to the house at all.

Sucks. Stuff that actually smells tends to get to me pretty bad as well. I don't give a shit about general clutter (I'm the one responsible for a lot of that in our house) or even dust, but anything that produces an odor/rots is sure to send me off the deep end.

I even make my wife triple bag half of the food she buys/receives from relatives because I don't like everything else in the fridge/cabinet smelling and tasting like low tide :D

I have my own office in our plan for the new house and I have a really nice sofa bed that is going in there. My wife and I actually sleep separately in the summer anyway because I sleep with the AC cranked as low as it will go and she still swears low temperatures cause colds :D

Clutter is one of the main reasons I want a house as big as possible. If needs be we can just take a whole room and use it for storage.

i'm an unabashed neat freak so our current situation is anathema to me. it has basically worn me down to "i no longer give a fuck until they're dead or we move". i am looking for a stop-gap solution until i can figure out wtf i want to do with my life. it sucks too because it's not really anything personal, my in-laws are very nice people..just that stuff grates on my nerves to a point that i can honestly say the less i'm there, the better.

I'd like to be neat, but day to day life tends to lead me to living in a small space that looks more like a university professor's office with books and papers and electronic devices strewn all over the place and probably couln't be described as "neat".

Not as bad as this guy's though

Sucks about personality clash. I'm fortunate in that my father in law owns very little, and my mother in law will be tossing most of her stuff before moving in. She will be bringing two pianos though :p

You know, I used to regard my mother-in-law as being completely insane for at least some of the same reasons you have mentioned. Fortunately, they lived about 100 miles away. I would have never been able to handle having to live with them.

and that's just the thing. i don't think he cares for all this junk either, as he's said to me about the crap in the attic (which can barely be navigated now) that i can "put it all on a plane and take it to canada" if i want.

i just don't understand why he puts up with it, it boggles my mind. i have told my wife in no uncertain terms that if she pulls any of the shit that her mother does that i will serve her papers and walk on the first offence, that's how adamantly i've come to feel about it now.

I dunno, my father in law listens to everything my mother in law says. She henpecks him constantly and I don't think I've ever seen him put hit foot down about anything.
