Tax-Dodging Multi-Millionaire Sisters

Postby Mulboyne » Wed Mar 12, 2008 2:05 pm

Reuters: Japanese sisters stash $56 million in boxes
Two sisters hid $56 million cash in cardboard boxes in what may be Japan's biggest-ever tax dodge, media said. Hatsue Shimizu, 64, and Yoshiko Ishii, 55, were arrested on suspicion of hiding a stash of yen they inherited from their father, a real estate investor from the western Japanese city of Osaka, the English-language Daily Yomiuri said on Wednesday. The sisters are thought to have begun withdrawing money from their father's bank accounts a few years before his death in 2004, the Yomiuri said. They then declared only a fraction of their inheritance and paid a comparatively small amount in tax, it added. The Yomiuri said Shimizu told prosecutors she had forgotten about the cash, much of which was hidden in her garage, while Ishii admitted the allegations. A spokesman for Osaka prosecutors said he could not comment on the case because it was under investigation.

They started withdrawing the money a few years before his death. Calculators out people… how many years would you need to withdraw 56 million dollars in a way that didn’t attract attention (assuming anything over 100 man yen a day would be suspicious)?

holy crap! That's withdrawing $10,000 (US) out the bank every single day of the year, including weekends for a little over 15 years!

If I ever get arrested and interrogated, this will be my claim too; “I can’t answer because the case is under investigation”.
Mr Kobayashi: First, I experienced a sort of overpowering feeling whenever I was in the room with foreigners, not to mention a powerful body odor coming from them. I don't know whether it was a sweat from the heat or a cold sweat, but I remember I was sweating whenever they were around.

With Marusa no Onna on the job, no one will get away with tax dodging!
