Car transportation costs

Postby Mr Doricar » Tue Mar 11, 2008 9:34 am

Hi guys 'n' gals,

Have any of you had to deal with transporting a car from Pref. to Pref. ?

I'm looking at a buying a car off Yahoo Auctions but it's located in Hiroshima and I want it bringing to Nagoya.

The seller says in advert, car will need to be transported due to lack of shaken.

Anyone know rough prices or can point me in direction of good company?

Thanks in advance

James

p.s. Or.....How easy is it to get slash plates like car dealers use?

I sent a motocycle from Tokyo to Miyazaki in Kyushu. It cost 60,000 yen. Most gas stations can put you in touch with movers who can do this. You might want to go to your regular station if you have one and ask them. Then you can shop their references for the best price.

My resident rice cooker just picked a place out of the phonebook to ship the bike.

Hiroshima to Nagoya should not be that bad. But, you might also want to consider just an overnighter down there and going to the Land Transportation Office (or contact them before you go) and they can tell you what you need to do to get the slash plates, or you might even be able to register it there and you can simply drive it back to Nagoya without having to use the slash plates.

Thanks for that. If I could register it, or somehow drive it home I'd be more than happy. Good excuse to go for a drink at my friends bar in Hiroshima. You know the singer Yazawa? My friend is obsessed with him and has a Yazawa style bar! hahah it's very sad.

Thanks for the advice though. I've been researching the whole registering a car, getting a new shaken done, paying taxes etc. for weeks now and I'm still bloody confused.

you might also want to consider the fact that if you plan on driving this car after you get it to nagoya, you're going to have to have the shaken done anyway.

maybe someone else can chime in on this, but perhaps it would be more cost effective to just get the shaken done then drive it back yourself and change the registration.. dunno. just seems that since you'll have to get it done anyway, you could do so and at least save yourself the cost of a transport.

If only it was that simple. Problem is I've got a competition at Suzuka on the 20th, so I'm buying this car purely to compete as it's ready to go. After that I'll either keep the car for myself or export it back to England.

But I'm going to be doing a lot of buying and selling so I will definately need to be using a transportation company at some point.

Why don't you buy yourself a truck and do it yourself? Or maybe rent one.

That is an option I'd considered. Would be a good opportunity to visit all sorts of towns in Japan. But I still would like to option ot someone else doing the donkey work for me!

Hiring a truck might be the cheapest option - it is not that expensive to hire cars/trucks here. Pity you can't takkuybin it.

Unless I'm mistaken, it is possible to drive cars even without Shaken provided you get temprary plates (the ones with the red stripes) from the shiyakusho nearest the point of departure, as well as go to the cops and tell them the route that you are going to take, and pay a special insurance fee. You also have to return the plates to the shiyakusho, but i still think this will by far and away the cheepest option for you.

Hi kusai,

You're correct, that's what I mentioned in my first post when I said 'slash plates'. I still need to look into proper transporter costs though as I may get to a point when I'm buying 2 or 3 cars a week from all over the place.

Thanks though

Cool. Sorry, I didnt see the p.s. part at the bottom of your post about slash plates. After posting, i spoke to a mate that uses the slash plates regularly, and he said they are really quick and easy to use.
Anyway, good luck...

Oh really? Hmm, do you think you could ask him some specifics? I.e. How to get 'em ;) haha I take it I would have to go town hall and get them. Do you know price or anything? Thanks for info.

Mate said it is priced on how many days you take the plates for. If you are driving from Hiroshima to Nagoya, and you dont fuck around, you could have the plates returned in 48 hrs,no? So I guess it shouldnt cost you more than about 5000 yen. best to ring up and find out.Good luck anyway...
