You make a good point Slim. This is another feature of the society that a lot of FGs never figure out in Japan because they never delve into the society deep enough to see it, or they see it, but just don't get it.
One of the reasons that the J-people can seem so aloof and or, unfriendly towards each other is the fear of contracting this unwanted mandatory "giri"! They do not want to be owing to someone, they don't know, or who are possibly, not the appropriate people that they feel they should be owing to!
Inversely, some of them feel that they can be more open to FGs because they consider that there is no standing social rules about incurring, or requiring any owing type "debt" to FGs.
An interesting phenomenon!
