Kyodo: Vending machines catch fire in central Tokyo business district

Two beverage vending machines installed in a building in the Shimbashi business district in central Tokyo caught fire Thursday morning. While no explosives were found, witnesses report hearing "sounds of explosion," the Tokyo Fire Department said. The Tokyo Fire Department and the Metropolitan Police Department are investigating the cause of the fire. The two machines are among five positioned side by side, facing a major road, in an office area near the Japan Railway Shimbashi station. The tops of both machines were burned and created a scene, drawing crowds. A 13-year-old boy from Hachioji, Tokyo, who witnessed the fire said, "I was shocked to see flames on top of the vending machines as I was about to cross the street. Smoke was spreading in the area even after the fire was extinguished."
