Interracial marriages

Postby canman » Mon Apr 07, 2008 12:14 pm

I just found this on a Canadian site talking about interracial marriages, and some of the information surprised me. For example,
"The Japanese are most likely to enter a mixed union, the census showed, at 74.7 per cent. The second and third groups most likely to be involved in an interracial relationship are Latin Americans (47 per cent) and blacks (40.6 per cent).

In contrast, South Asians and Chinese are among the least likely to form a union outside their group."
Here is the link to the page.

All they're saying is that 74.7% of the Japanese that're living in Canada are in a mixed marriage.

But this isn't surprising when you consider that Japanese seem reluctant (and may even have difficulty obtaining visas) to live outside of Japan unless they're in (or about to enter) a mixed marriage. And I would've thought that it's hard to compare that to other "races" who've been established in large numbers in Canada for many generations, including prior to WWII, and thus have much larger "pools" of their race available if they desire to marry within them.

And it also seems to depend on where the mix is proposed. I remember seeing an Aussie comedian of Greek parents complaining that Greek couples who'd moved to Oz after WWII (and there were many that settled in Melbourne) were much more strict on their kids in general (and put pressure on them to marry others of Greek origin) than the Greeks still in Greece. It was like the clock stopped for them and they wanted to preserve their culture in a new land.

However, I suspect that the Japanese in the Canadian census had probably already committed to a mixed marriage before they moved there to live.

Kuohinge, I think you bring up a good point. It would probably be more interesting to break the data down according to how many generations have lived in Canada than strictly along cultural lines. Back in the early 20th century, there was a lot more pressure on 1st and 2nd generation Italians and Irish to marry other Italians and Irish than there is now. I imagine that if you analyzed the situation along those lines, you'd find that held true across people of other cultural backgrounds. Of course, stating that the issue of being accepting of intrerracial / intercultural marriage is a factor of number of generations living in a country is going to sell fewer papers than saying it's a factor of racial / cultural background.
