Examples of solar panels in the Tokyo area

Postby Captain Japan » Mon Apr 07, 2008 2:43 pm

I am looking for an example or two solar panels that have been installed in the Tokyo area. I'd be interested in any type: home, industrial, or commercial. I just need to be able to take a photo. Thanks for any information!

Not Tokyo, but Odawara Station has a visible array.

Above are pictures of the 東京都水道局朝霞浄水場 - Tokyo Metropolitan Water Dept water purification plant in Asaka, Saitama.

There's also a Sekisui model house with panels in Tachikawa. Don't know if it's still there. If not, you could always contact any house builder and ask them if they have a model home with panels available to photograph.

You know that weird green sculpture thing at Daikanyama Address? I think it's got solar panels on it.

I can't find a photo of the panels but from below it looks like this:

You can find small ones around the center dividers of most of the large roads around downtown Tokyo. They power the flickering yellow lights, among other things (possibly also used to power Blinky's dildo)..

Yokohama City has a bunch of mega-ripoff solar panel systems in public buildings. See the official list and photos here:
http://www.city.yokohama.jp/me/kankyou/kisha/epb/2003/20040330/

The newish central post office of Tsuzuki Ward has a state-of-the-art solar panel array / water recycling / eco-horseshit system that costs MORE than the price of the actual damn building. Tomorrow I am going to the ward office next next to that eco-fraud building. If you wish, I could take better photos for you of the passive solar design, solar computer control system and solar cell panels (none which have ever functioned properly) that you cannot really see well in these photos of the boondoggle.

This is perfect. Includes the CO2 numbers. Thanks.

I am having a tough time verifying that the panels in Odawara are solar. I keep just getting that one photo on that blog. I'll keep looking.

Here's an Odakyu Railway link. The Shonandai station wiki mentions the installation specifically:

However, they don't get a mention in the Odawara Station wiki so it's anybody's guess if the photo I posted earlier is actually of the panels. Since they probably aren't ashamed of them, you might try a call or email to the station or Odakyu to verify them if you think they might be useful to include in your article.

NPR had a short broadcast on solar plans in Japan last year. There's a link on this page:

Lucky you, I do translations on solar energy/turbine generators and such quite regularly (unfortunately for me, because they are horrendously boring...).

Solar panels are generally either "Solar Panel" in katakana ("ソ]" this is what most average persons here will know them as), or in most technical manuals:
[url=http://images.google.com/images?um=1&hl=en&safe=off&q=%E5%A4%AA%E9%99%BD%E9%9B%BB%E6%B1%A0%E6%9D%BF&btnG=Search+Images]太陽電池板

But can be and often is written a billion other ways:
太陽光電池板
ソーラー板
太陽板
太陽パネル
太陽光パネル
etc.

Should be able to find lots of images looking for "太陽光発電"

Other related terminology (I have about 5 different vocabularly lists from different companies on the subject, this one is already available online):

photovoltaic array ==> 太陽電池
photovoltaic cell ==> 光電池
annual amount of photovoltaic power generation ==> 年間太陽光発電量
JPEA, Japan Photovoltaic Energy Association ==> 日本太陽光発電協会
photovoltaic array ==> 太陽電池

Also check these for lots more info/vocabulary:
