Toto (the band, not the toilet) And SMAP

Another story from (the) Road to the Deep East:

Toto Scolded Smap
Shukan Bunshun is reporting an interesting happening occurred during the recording of SMAP's TV show. According to it, SMAP invited a world-famous musician to their TV show, SMAPxSMAP last month. And in this show, they collaborated and performed their representative song together. Then, the guitarist of the group got angry about the quality of SMAP's singing, and he suddenly stopped playing the guitar and left the stage. Then, other member from TO... no, the world-famous progressive rock group calmed his anger, and he came back, and the recording was taken place. However, before members of SMAP sing, they had to take a one-hour vocal lesson from him. Why did Steve Lukather get angry about SMAP?...Maybe he was introduced SMAP by their agent or the producer of the show, 'You are going to perform with one of Japanese representative singers!!' 'How does their music like?' 'Well... well, Japanese Backstreet Boys!!'...The agent or producer should explain a little more: 'They are Japanese Backstreet Boys, but in Japan, you know, people need songs for karaoke. Hence, they are not so good as singers. So, please wink at their singing. ' Or, he or she should explain, SMAP stands for 'Sports Music Assembly People', sports come first, and Music arrives later...more...

The Toto/ Smap YouTube videos have mostly been removed but, if you move fast, you can still catch "Africa" on Hoosoo TV

Sounded OK at first, but I started chuckling when the chorus came and I could just imagine Toto's reaction the first time SMAP performed/butchered it for them in rehersal.

Wow, it's pretty harsh when your singing is bad enough to make Toto angry. We aren't exactly talking about the zenith of the musical world there. :)

Road to the Deep East again on Coldplay performing with SMAP:

[yt]9RyEtPy2uJ4[/yt]

If I were still a British pop fan, this incident must be a huge shock enough to make me kill myself. 17 year-old me would have thought this is a handshake with the evil Japanese lapsed entertainment business and disrespected Coldplay. But now we could learn , in reality, every foreign artist visiting Japan has to perfome with SMAP in SMAPxSMAP to sell their products in Japanese market. I'll be waiting for Slipknot to perform with SMAP someday and have a boring conversation with its members. 'It's a unique mask, isn't it? I always think, if members of such influential SMAP were wiser and better as singers, Japanese show business world must have been better than today
