Japanese cop stabs self to avoid work
AP
TOKYO - A Japanese policeman distraught by working long hours and weekends for two months stabbed himself in the stomach with a knife to get some time off, police said Monday.

The 44-year-old officer knifed himself at his home in northwestern Japan on May 23, but told police he had been attacked, prompting an attempted murder investigation, Ishikawa prefecture police said in a statement.

Investigators became suspicious of his story after they could not find evidence of anyone who matched the description the officer had given of the supposed attacker, a police spokesman said on condition of anonymity, citing department policy.

Suspicions also were raised because the officer had waited about an hour before reporting the alleged attack, the spokesman said. His wounds were not life-threatening.

The officer, whose name was not released by police, had been in charge of a disaster relief detail following a March 25 earthquake in the area that killed one person, injured more than 300 and damaged or destroyed more than 14,800 homes.

"He became very busy, he felt like he couldn't handle the work he had to do, and he felt the work was weighing him down," said the police spokesman.

The officer acknowledged he had stabbed himself following his May 31 release from the hospital, the spokesman said. The case is now being investigated as filing a false report, a misdemeanor.

Japanese workers often face long overtime hours and weekends with little or no compensation and frequently must make long commutes to work. Death from overwork, known as "karoshi," has steadily increased since the Health Ministry first recognized the phenomenon in 1987.

Mom charged with attempted murder after stabbing son in chest
Mainichi
OSAKA -- A 30-year-old woman was arrested on charges of attempted murder on Thursday after she stabbed her son in the chest, police said.

Emiko Nakashita, from Osaka's Ikuno-ku, has admitted to the allegations.

"I stabbed him because he didn't behave himself. I didn't intend to kill him," officers quoted the mother as saying.

Nakashita stabbed the 10-year-old boy in the chest at their apartment at about 4 a.m. on Thursday. She called police, saying that the boy happened to have been stabbed in the chest. But she admitted stabbing him after officers arrived at the scene.

They also found bruises on the boy's body and burn marks on his back. They suspect that Nakashita had habitually abused her son. Nakashia's 38-year-old husband was not at home at the time.

The head teacher at the boy's elementary school said that school officials had noticed bruises on the boy's body when he transferred from another school in February and reported the case to a municipal child consultation office. (Mainichi)

Police believe that the victim was Michio Miyazono, 46, from Higashikurume.

Colleagues said that Miyazono often scolded Okamura about his work.

I didn't realize that Japanese were that proficient with knives. I feel left out as my only experience with knives (aside from dinner and butter varieties) came in metal shop. I made one, but quickly graduated to making throwing stars which would stick real well into those whack fire-resistant/asbestos square ceiling tiles all over the LA Unified School District. The throwing stars would fall now and then, and the teacher would yell at the guys and demand that he could pull on each girl's ponytail. He eventually got convicted of molestation.

The video didn't say how much the Ginsu knife, the matching fork, the set of 6 steak knives with matching handles, the 6-in-1 peeler, the curly thingamabob, and the other thing that I can't remember costs....I am now so depressed, especially since I remember when that was the most dope TV ad ever. After that came the Medical Life Alert "I've Fallen, and I Can't Get Up!", which raised the bar for bad TV wactors/wactresses.

Personally, I see this thread as a poorly disguised effort by Captain Japan to push the agenda of stronger knife control laws in Japan.

Allow me to be the first to respond by saying: "Knives don't kill people, people kill people."

After stabbing Miura, Kanagawa is believed to have shaved his head and returned to Tsuchiura.

'A quiet person'

"Kanagawa is a computer game lover. He is a quiet person, but he is a man who snapped so easily," a 22-year-old company employee who knows Kanagawa said.

"He is a serious person, but he would suddenly get tense. On hearing a trivial thing, he would suddenly snap and pound his desk strongly, so I picked my words carefully," he said.

Kanagawa's younger brother's friends living in the neighborhood said they often saw Kanagawa, who owns about 100 computer games, concentrating on playing computer games at home.

They also said Kanagawa was quiet, and was a nondescript character. "He always stayed at home, and played computer games all the time. He didn't seem to have any friends," one of the boys said.

Kanagawa was living with his parents, two sisters and brother..

If someone starts blaming the video games for causing this, I'll shit out a horse. I mean, I played major video games as a kid and I ain't ever gone bezerk in Tsuchuria...exciting town north of suicidal Tsukuba. Back when RPG referred to paper, pencil, and dice games some people were saying similar things. That those people would divorce themselves from reality and wind up even weirder.

I suppose that it is easier to walk around saying that "Tempest" and "Stargate" with it's 8 buttons & knobs caused me to become psychopath that I am today. If only the video game had hugged me now and then and told me that it cared about me as more than a source of quarter by quarter revenue, I wouldn't have slashed all those people in Tsuchuria.

Wasn't there another stabbing today?.. Some kid with a 12cm knife near Okayama station? I just saw a blurb on the news, but couldn't find anything..

Oh, no.. Not a stabbing. A shoving while carrying a knife:

Boy shoves stranger to death at Japan train station--police
http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/breakingnews/world/view/20080326-126519/Boy-shoves-stranger-to-death-at-Japan-train-station--police
A teenager who said he didn't care whom he hurt was arrested for shoving a stranger in front of a train, police said Wednesday, in the country's second random killing this week.

Police arrested the 18-year-old late Tuesday immediately after he pushed Kuniaki Kariya, 38, off the platform in front of an arriving train in the western city of Okayama.

The train ran over Kariya, a local government employee, who died five hours later, police said.

Under questioning, the teenager openly admitted he pushed the man off, police said.

"If I killed someone, then I can go to jail. It didn't matter whom I'd kill," a police spokesman quoted him as telling. The 18-year-old's name is being withheld because he is a minor under Japanese law.

The teenager was also carrying a knife with a five-inch blade, police said.

"He told police that he had thought about stabbing someone," the spokesman said. "He said he wandered around the station but couldn't get decisive."

Tokyo man stabs acquaintance over long-held grudge
Mainichi
A man who stabbed an acquaintance, apparently after years of drunken abuse, has been arrested, law enforcers said.

The man, Mitsuo Horiai, 58, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following the attack, which took place on a road in Tokyo's Kita-ku at about 7:50 p.m. on Thursday.

Investigators say Horiai chased the 60-year-old acquaintance out of a bar brandishing a sashimi knife, stabbing him in the side and leaving him seriously injured.

Horiai had reportedly hated the acquaintance for the past five or six years since he would yell at him when drinking.

Man arrested for fatally stabbing wife
Mainichi
A man has been arrested for fatally stabbing his wife after he holed himself up at his home in suburban Tokyo over the weekend, police said.

Hajime Takachi, 39, a company employee, was initially arrested on charges of attempted murder after stabbing his wife, Makie, 38, at their home in Hino, Tokyo. Police upgraded the charges to murder after the victim died.

Takachi has denied the allegations, telling police, "I don't know anything."

Makie Takachi sought help from a neighbor, saying, "I was stabbed by my husband," at around 2:20 a.m. on Sunday, local police said. She was stabbed in the chest and other parts of her body and was taken to hospital, but she died about one hour and 40 minutes later.

Hino Police Station officials said Takachi stabbed his wife with a kitchen knife at their home at around 2:15 a.m. He then holed himself up on the first floor of the house with the knife in his hand for about four hours before investigators stormed the house and overpowered him.

Takachi's 10-year-old son was sleeping on the second floor of the house, but he was rescued by investigators when Takachi moved to the living room on the first floor shortly after 5 a.m.

While Takachi was barricaded in the house, investigators kept on trying to persuade him to surrender through a door of the house. Neither Takachi nor investigators sustained injuries.

Takachi was living with his wife and son.

Sounds like an incredibly big miss on one or both of their parts. I think the news was saying something about them not being supervised by a teacher but not too sure about it.
