Okay, I'll bite. I am a fucked gaijin and when I am discriminated against in Japan I do not mind because I understand their situation. In fact, I would do the same thing if I was in their shoes. Here are some facts. Japanese people are docile, especially younger ones. Foreigners can easily take advantage of them and many in fact do. Many robberies in Japan are commited by foreigners. Walk in Shibuya and tell me how many Middle Eastern characters sell phoney telephone cards. In fact, in Shinjuku and Shibuya (maybe other places as well but I only know of these two) I guarantee you that if you spot a MIddle Eastern person, he is probably overstaying his visa and is engaged in some shady business. The only other sad part beside them being shady is that the bastards usually have a pretty J-chick with them all the time.

So what I am saying is that Japanese people cannot protect themselves against the charlatans so they must take more unconventional actions.

Okay, let the punches roll....

Sheeeeeeeeeeeee-it Jack, no argument there.
But you WOULD be surprised how many those phone card sellers have Perm. Visas.

Hell, those Phone Card boys are the reason I still don't have Green Card after 20 years. Every few years, some TODAI turtle-head in the Foriegn Ministry decides they need to "crack down" on the day I go in. Arrrrg.

Jack, you lost me when you made the fallacious argument that Japan's treaty obligations can be ignored due to the presence of some Iranians selling bogus phone cards in Tokyo. The OECD should revoke their signature on the treaty until they fulfill their obligations:
Article 98: (1) This Constitution shall be the supreme law of the nation and no law, ordinance, imperial rescript or other act of government, or part thereof, contrary to the provisions hereof, shall have legal force or validity.
(2) The treaties concluded by Japan and established laws of nations shall be faithfully observed.

Are speaking from experience? How's the fiancee?

But the 'shady business' is probably with those 'docile' Yakuza.

I know! That's the biggest travesty of all! How dare they soil those pure, innocent Japanese sluts... before I can.

CS,

My bottom line is that I think I put up with a lot more bullshit than many of you guys who may live there everyday seem to be able to stomach. I get discriminated against and I smile. No one sits next to me on the train and I say how lucky I am for having so much free space. Taxis don't stop for me on the street and I say how lucky I am to spend an extra few minutes in Ginza and on and on. So, I guess I don't demand to be treated in a particular way. I just take whatever comes to me in strides. I love that little country. Can't find any fault with it even when it hits me in the face. The only complaint I have are those damn foreigners.

One of the benefits of being short like me (173cm) is that Japanese people don't seem to discriminate as much... perhaps it's because I can make eye contact without them having to look up...

Of course some Japanese fluency helps too... ;)

I still don't agree that widespread and systematic discrimination is ever acceptable if based on the crimes/faults of a small number of visible members of a group*.

But unfortunately this happens over and over as too many small minds use the excuse that the media/government portrays all members of a group in a certain light so it must be true.

*Groups:
"Foreigners" in Japan
African amercians in Canada/US
Arabs/muslims
Christians
Jews
Indigenous peoples
Bankers
Lawyers

......the list goes on and on from the dawn of "civilisation"

GomiGirl,

Generalisation is basic statistics. You take a sample of the population and see what percentage behaves in a certain way and then you extrapolate that amongs the whole population. Trying to be politically correct is being naive, much as our governments in this part of the world wants us to be. If some segment of the population does not want to be stereotyped then they should behave in an examplary fashion beyond reproach, especially if you are a foreigner in a country. In your list, I fall in 4 categories.
