I'm watching it happen right around me, I live in the middle of the Ethanol Belt.

it took a total complete idiot to come up with the ethanol for fuel idea. or was it a genius in a think tank whos problem was how to procure more lots of oil and natural gas.

whats the cause of shortages and price hikes? mostly the high cost of oil. also farmers have switched to corn because they get paid more for their crops. crop prices will go up and they will again switch to the most profitable crop. when one essential commodity in society goes up in price, it works its way up the ladder and all commodities go up in price. this is just the tip of the iceberg. poor weather worldwide has destroyed crops. massive bee deaths, that usually pollinate crops, ar barely existant. expect all food prices to at least triple in the next year. for all you knotheads that think this is nothing. think about this. alchohol is made of grain. beer ships on trucks that use gas. get ready to double your drinking costs.

there are going to be a lot of farmers entering the 100k plus car market.

More importantly, the US government needs to put an end to 20 billion dollars in subsidies for the oil and gas industry.

My man, I totally agree with that. But keep in mind the ramifications--you think Americans are complaining about the price of gas now...

It's a complex of political as well as economic issues, as are farm subsidies you aptly mentioned. The energy subsidies are unnecessary but their withdrawal would surely be used by energy companies as another excuse to needlessly raise prices even further. As to the rice rationing which is the original topic raised by this post...the journalism on this issue has been largely irresponsible. Sure there is some rice rationing but for only a couple of varieties of rice, namely Basmati and Jasmine rice. Most Americans don't even know what the f*ck those are, let alone eat them. This scare is largely manufactured and at present doesn't represent a real crisis in the United States, although the same might not be said for those living in other nations which are highly dependent on rice as a food staple.

of course were bread eaters in the usa. wheat reserves are also at an all time low. need wheat for bread and spaghetti. 6 pounds of grain to produce one pound of beef. this is not looking good. also the price of oil is still climbing. time to cut back on hostess clubs.

Here in the middle of the U.S. I have no idea what any of you are talking about. No food shortages here.

No butter here in the slums of Denenchofu---Last night I bought whipping cream, threw into a bowl with a dash of salt, hit it with a hand mixer on the the high setting, and 5 minutes later, viola, whipped butter.

Have yet to see anything threatening shortages, but that which is reported in the media.

It's interesting to get a perspective on all this from sources other than media outlets such as newspapers...

There's been no domestic butter in the Queen's Isetan in Shirokane but imported butter is on the shelves. The main people suffering are catering businesses who can't fill large scale orders and so have taken some items of their menus.
