Blond On The Dohyo

Asahi: Does it matter if there are blond wrestlers?
... Baruto, who hails from the small Baltic state of Estonia, is a natural blond. His striking hair aside, he has attracted the attention of sumo fans for his meteoric rise to the senior rank after only eight basho (tournaments). Every sekitori is required to do his hair in a topknot called o-icho, but never in the history of sumo has there been anyone with blond o-icho... Some sumo purists assert that since o-icho is a distinctive hairdo that stands out, Baruto should dye his hair black. However, the prevalent view of Japan sumo association officials appears to be that he should be allowed to keep his natural hair color. And Baruto himself apparently has no desire to mess with his natural hair color. There is quite a mix of foreign wrestlers today, including those from Russia, Czech and Brazil. Many came to Japan in their teens and have worked hard to master the language and adjust culturally. It would be unkind to force them to change their hair color after all their hard work to rise in the ranks.

Baruto earlier on FG: "Why do foreign rikishi speak fluent Japanese?"

dunno ...

Postby etto_neh » Fri Oct 07, 2005 4:17 pm

I dunno if it's still true or not... but according to the wife, kids at most schools aren't allowed to have chapatsu. That rule may be relaxed nowadays- not sure. But not only did they not allow chapatsu, if a kid for some reason, say, was born hafu or whatever, didn't have perfectly normal-looking japanese hair, they'd be required to dye it.

I think the part about no chapatsu in school is true, since I saw somewhere on TV within the last year that hair-dye sales totally-fuckin' skyrocket during vacation time.

About sumo: Is it true that, by assoc. laws, that only one FG per sumo house(?) is allowed?

That was mentioned is this Shukan Post article although it is translated as "unspoken rule of 'one foreigner in one stable' in the current sumo world" rather than as laid down in the laws.

Thanks Mulboyne!

I wish there were a brain-dead way, like google news, that covered the English news sites about .jp. Weeks after the fact it's hard to remember where some tidbit of information came from.. like Mainichi, wife, drunken bar room conversations, etc.

Kyodo via Yahoo: Estonian Baruto wins juryo division title with perfect record
Estonian wrestler Baruto defeated Takanowaka at the Spring Grand Sumo Tournament on Sunday to become the first wrestler in 43 years to win the second-tier juryo division title with an unblemished record. Baruto, 21, whose real name is Kaido Hoovelson, wrapped up his campaign by throwing down Takanowaka for his 15th win on the final day of the meet at Osaka Municipal Gymnasium. Former yokozuna Kitanofuji was the last wrestler to go unbeaten throughout the tournament in the juryo division in the Kyushu meet in 1963. Baruto is set to win promotion to sumo's elite makuuchi division when the rankings are released for the summer meet in May. Promotion would see him become the fifth European wrestler to compete in sumo's top flight. Kokkai, who hails from the former Soviet republic of Georgia, was the first wrestler from Europe to reach the makuuchi division, in which Bulgarian ozeki Kotooshu and Russian brothers Roho and Hakurozan are currently competing.

Baruto has been reprimanded for an incident in July when he wandered around Roppongi late at night without his topknot and wearing shorts and a T-shirt. Here he is apologizing. News in Japanese here.

This is pretty cool news. It seems that all or nearly all of the new foreign rikishi hail from the former Soviet republics or from Mongolia (of course, Hawaiians have participated in years past, too). Anyone know offhand why there is a pipeline of Rikishi from those regions and not others?

A guess: some people will do anything to get out of Mongolia.

The US. The half black wrestler who's still in the lower divisions yet, is the son of Inter-FM's announcer Marvin.

Sorry, a few years too late in answering this question, but I'm sure the influx of ex-Communist Bloc sumo wrestlers stems from the fact that more stringent gender and doping testing of female shot-putters and discus throwers at the Olympics have left the people who once would have occupied those professions with no other choice but to head to Japan.
I swear Baruto must have some genetic link to Kornelia Ender, except he's not quite as powerfully built as she was.

Good on 'im! He deserves it.

I was a little surprised to see that he has an Estonian (?) wife. I thought it was de-rigueur for foreign sumo wrestlers to marry the tiniest Japanese women they could find.

Ah, ok.

Interestingly, since Jan 7, every basho winner portrait hanging in the Ryogoku Kokugikan (they hang the last 32), is now of a foreigner.

http://ajw.asahi.com/article/behind_news/social_affairs/AJ201201070043

The change would normally have happened after the September basho last year, but it was delayed due to the canceled March basho and the 'unofficial' May basho last year.
