Japanese tourists exporting measles worldwide
The number of the measles patients reported in Hawaii in an 11-year period from 1999 was 182. The figure includes 57 foreign visitors, of which 49 of them, or 86 percent, were Japanese, according to Mitsuaki Suzuki, a pediatrician at Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children in Honolulu.

In five years during the period, the number of Japanese measles patients in Hawaii outnumbered local patients.

Union Bulletin: Measles suspected in Japanese attendee of church conference
Public health officials in Seattle and King counties have determined that a Generation Church Conference attendee from Japan, who attended both sessions of the mega-conference on March 25-29, became ill on the way back to Japan and subsequently developed a rash that may be measles. On Wednesday, officials announced a Grant County family had three confirmed cases of measles, of a total of eight suspected instances, all in children who had not been immunized. The family had attended the Kirkland church conference on March 27-29. Although measles in the Japanese conference-goer has not yet been laboratory confirmed, there have been thousands of measles cases involving nearly all regions of Japan since the beginning of 2008. Attendees at the conference were from numerous states, including Washington, Oregon and Idaho. Public health officials are working with conference organizers to notify attendees through e-mail they have likely been exposed to measles. Everyone who attended will be asked to contact a health-care provider if they had a rash illness April 1-19.
