Question.

I know a bloke who is an experienced process/mechanical engineer with level 1 japanese. What chance would he have with getting technical translation work in Japan. He 36, is that too old as well? Thanks.

He might be able to make better money as an engineer here, but if he is any good at translating (language skill does not necessarily equal skill at translation) he shouldn't have a problem finding freelance work through agencies, but he would probably be able to make more money working in-house somewhere.

I thought age would be a problem in Japan.

Maybe if he was 50, but at 36 and he has good Japanese language skills and engineering qualifications, shouldn't be a huge issue to get a good position somewhere, for freelance translation they don't care about age at all since they don't need to worry about retirement, sick leave, performance in the office etc., if you can do the work and get it to them fast that's all they care about.
