$#!ing sparrows

Postby james » Tue May 06, 2008 6:24 pm

not sure what the japanese obsession with this winged vermin is, but they've been driving me nuts for several years now. messy, noisy and obnoxious. the farmers around here don't cover their feed, and thus they've reproduced quite prodigiously.

so are there any ornithologists on the board who can give me any tips for getting rid of them? am i dealing with a native or invasive species? would an american trap designed for english house sparrows be effective? are there any laws protecting them that i should be aware of?

am i the only one here who hates these little fuckers?

I'd quite happily exchange all your sparrows for all the crows around here.

The crows are so big here, too. Scary. Once I saw one carry off a live pigeon.

I saw a crow hassling an eagle a couple of days ago. You'd think an eagle could stand up for itself.

Whatever you fucking do, don't get caught for catapulting something the J-gov has labeled protected,
the protected birds in Japan include

night heron
sparrow hawk
certain species that birds migrate
....I'm sure you can find more on google

penalties are up to six months in prison and 50,000 yen fine

A good way to scare the birds is to have a few young kittens around block, and don't fucking feed them so the cats are forced to hunt.
Now you'll have a new problem tomcats crying at night, the smell of tomcats piss etc

The crows in Japan are mean. I stopped jogging on my normal route because the fuckers discovered the park where I used to jog. They are there every morning and they seem to increase in numbers. Noisy and some of the biggest cocksuckers, I mean crows, I have ever seen.

(1) You could try installing nest boxes and perches to attract (or try and introduce some) "Sparrow hawks" - which were mentioned in Buraku's post - or any other sparrow-eating birds that may exist in Japan.

Or (2) you could employ an automatic machine - for example: Sparrow Repeller

But my favourite (3) would be . . .

a flakvierling - which can take down Mosquitos, so they should work on sparrows. It's just hard to find the right ammunition these days.

They are considered a delicacy and where there are the low level yakitoriyas that have them, for the most part, they are found on fairly high price menus.

Ukaitoriyama in Tokyo originally became famous behind them. Some people love them, but I think they look like a singed tweety bird on a stick, however, everything goes down easily with the right amount of sake!

You think sparrows are bad, the mansion i live in is infested with insane cats. The creepy thing is they actually ride the elvetors with you, one of the little f**kers got onto my second floor balcony and parked its vanload.

They keep the sparrows away though...
