Customs Blocks Counterfeit Hermes Bags

Postby Mulboyne » Thu May 15, 2008 6:11 pm

[floatl]Image[/floatl]Asahi: Imported Hermes knock-offs banned in Japan
Customs officials on Thursday started banning imports of bags resembling Hermes' coveted Birkin and Kelly products, the first such move based on the external appearance of a high-end brand. The measure, requested by Hermes Japon Co., was taken on the basis of the Unfair Competition Prevention Law. "To protect our intellectual property, we have sent our employees to customs to block imports in the past," an official of Hermes Japon said. "We are glad about the ban for the sake of our customers." Birkin and Kelly have been the French fashion house's signature items for several decades, ranging in price from 800,000 yen to 10 million yen. Low-priced knock-offs bearing striking resemblances to the genuine bags but without the Hermes logo have circulated widely in Japan. Many of them have been sold on the Internet. Two years ago, these counterfeits were added to a list of products covered under a system banning imports of fake brand-name products and other items, according to customs officials. But imposing such bans has not been easy because of the many conditions required, they said. A party requesting a ban, for example, must first obtain a written statement signed by the trade minister. So far, customs officials have taken the measure for only two cases--the mascot doll of American Family Life Assurance Co. of Columbus and a large-size motorcycle manufactured by Honda Motor Co.

Although some counterfeit purses are really shoddy, there are many counterfeit (especially those from China) that have at least as good quality and appearance as the originals.

It's a shame really, if those counterfeiters just redirected their talents towards making their own originally designed products, while still maintaining a decent cost savings, I would buy them without hesitation. Personally when I buy anything, I don't give a damn about the brand name. I only care about the quality, appearance, and usage.

Of course, I wonder if I am the exception, since there are many people who seek out name brand labels for the "bling" (show-off) factor.

I really doubt this. I've yet to see one product from China that is as high in quality in materials and workmanship as products made in the 1st world. Initial appearance may be similar, but in the long run the materials and workmanship just don't hold up.

There is a reason for this that isn't mentioned in the article.

The bags are brought into the country without the brand tags attached. The tags are shipped separately.

After the bags have cleared customs the tags are applied inside Japan and the goods are then sold here, either to people who know they are buying knock-offs or to suckers who end up spending large amounts of cash for a fake.

(If Charles has ever bought a Hermes bag it is probably one of these. He "got a deal")

While they're making a big stink about the eroded value of designer bags, I sure hope they don't miss any of the shipments of counterfeit food or medical supplies that also come from China.

"Isn't it great that Grandpa got that pacemaker just in time! I thought that the insurance wouldn't cover that, but somehow they found a supplier with a lower price!"
"It's a miracle. Hey... what's that sound? It sounds like that cheap knockoff handheld pong game I bought in Chinatown last week... but why would Grandpa's chest make those noises?.."

Works well for them then -- 'cause they probably couldn't afford it anyway!

She may not want an Hermes bag, but she surely wants a man who can afford to give her one.

I'm sure that's true for you, alicia, but what you wrote is exactly the same mantra that every teenager uses to wheedle some cash out of mom and/or dad (Greji?) to buy a brand-name thing. I know I used it, lo these many years ago.

And this gets back to my query in another thread about what happened to all the Vuitton bags in Japan. J-chix would tell you they liked Vuitton bags because they were well-made and durable, not because they happened to scream conspicuous consumption. Well, if they're so goddamn durable, where are they today? I'll answer my lame rhetorical question: they're moldering in closets because they were bought for the bling factor after all, and once that wore off (and it must've worn off many-a Vuitton bag after the Great Vuitton Era of the 90s in Japan)...well, yesterday's papers.

-catone
-probably the best bag you can get is one of those massive Costco units: they're almost free, they're waterproof, they're incredibly durable, and the amount of crap you can jam in one is incredible. Too bad you can't close the top.

A lot of the knockoffs look almost identical and real ones, and the buyers don't even realize it. A lot of producers have copies of the original blueprints because the managers also work for the real companies. The companies don't want to face the real problem, doing business in China, because it's become their lifeblood. Instead they target their own customers who may honestly think they're buying the real thing at a large discount.

The documentary is 47 minutes long, but you can skip to 5:40 for the heart of the problem.
