The Sound Of Perfume

"Secret Secret" (2008 )

It's probably about time we had a thread about Perfume. This group, comprising three girls from Hiroshima, has just seen their new release "GAME" go to No.1 on the Oricon chart. This ZakZak article (Japanese) describes their music as techno-pop and says that its the first time the genre has hit the top spot since YMO. Perfume probably have more in common with idol groups rather than those techno pioneers but they do seem to have developed a broad and eclectic fan base. One music critic quoted in the article says that they combine the attraction of old girl groups like Candies and Pink Lady with an appeal to the Akihabara crowd. On top of that, the techno veneer makes them more acceptable to club DJs than other idol combos. The article also mentions that their cover of the Juicy Fruits 1980 song "Jenny Wa Gokigen Naname" probably brings back memories for fans of that band:

[YT]eT9ayLkREoM[/YT]

I met one 50 year old bloke at a bar who had two Perfume fan magazines with him and who declared himself an unabashed admirer, ranking the band second only to his main love, Pink Floyd. Separately, a thirty year old girl who mainly likes thrash metal also said she liked the band and added, perhaps a little gratuitously, that they are very popular in lesbian bars. The producer behind their sound is Yasutaka Nakata who first worked with the girls in 2003 and their profile has been steadily rising since then. The ZakZak article mentions that another part of their appeal might be down-to-earth approach in interviews where the girls generally use their hometown Hiroshima accents rather than switching to Tokyo-ben as many popular idols do.

"Polyrhythms" (2007)

Many of their videos, including English fansubbed versions, are widely available on YouTube so I'll leave you to dig those out for yourselves if you are so inclined.

Yasutaka Nakata is also the producer behind Capsule. He has a very well defined sound, but if you are into that sort of thing, he rocks.

I'd have to say my favorite song by far is "Chocolate Disco" because everything about it, from the title, to the lyrics, to the performance, makes me break out in giggles.

That first song sounds almost interchangeable with Perfume, doesn't it.

Oh and the Vocaloid Hatsune Miku version of the same. The circle is complete.

Yeah... this latest album has really picked up on Capsule's 'DIRTY BASS' sound, and it's totally for the better.

GAME is a better song than Secret Secret, if you ask me.

I had a similar thought...the solo vocals are in secret secret are very Vocaloid like.

Thanks for posting these vids. The music might be a bit cookie cutter, but it's really catchy. I like that clubby technopoppy sound.

Butterfly is a pretty good track as well, although the vocals are in the background compaired to the overall beat driving the track.

"Love The World"

...Now we know we are living in 'Perfume era' after idol ice age, and we had already experienced the platinum hit of 'Game', so it is not as amazing as one year ago, but it is still the first time that Perfume's sinlge was placed #1 on Oricon...

From here.

Yo tambien. Gotta love the lip syncing action.

Very innovative material coming out of Japan, but I 'd hate to say it but all the next songs that will ever come out of these gals will sound the same. Same recycle beat over same melody. We'll see. They don't even their own music, do they?

I've just been watching them on TV and I don't get why they wouldn't hire a hotter bunch of chicks to lip sync to digitally enhanced voices.
