Ugly Americans

Postby Jack » Thu May 22, 2008 10:09 pm

I just read this book Ugly Americans
http://www.amazon.com/Ugly-Americans-Cowboys-Markets-Millions/dp/0060575018/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1211460992&sr=8-1

Any of you read this? It was a good quick read about Tokyo financial types. Sounded pretty accurate to me except the part about spending $8,000 at Gas Panic in Roppongi.

That's a nice tip

It's possible. I am sure I have supported the GP franchise with that much cash within my lifetime.

$8000 is what you're likely to end up spending in one of those heavily touted strip clubs in Roppongi - once they get you drunk enough on the overly expensive champagne and get you to pay on credit card.

I probably know too much about this.

Okay but the scene in the book I am talking about is happening at Gas Panic. Anyway, not to nitpick, I get the author's point. He wanted to convey the fact that you can easily blow eight grand in a nightclub in Tokyo, something that is unheard of in western countries.

I read those sorts of stories fairly regularly, I suppose you'd have to read FARK or some place like that, for such seedy news. There are plenty of sketchy strip clubs in the US (and everywhere else) that will load your credit card. I think I recall hearing of one customer who got hit for $100k on a high-limit card.

Spending eight grand in Gas Panic in one night would be tought unless you're buying for everyone again and again.

BTW, was anyone at eGeronimos (or was it Magumbos?) last month when that guy rolled in who kept buying EVERYONE rounds all night. He dropped $25K in a month at one of them. Even my friends in banking were surprised by the excess.

The CEO of Savvis Communications managed to hit $241k for a night in 2003.

http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/1021051scores1.html

OCTOBER 21--A Missouri businessman who claims that a $241,000 bill for a night of lap dance luxuriating at Manhattan's leading strip club is a fraud is being sued by American Express for refusing to pay the debt. According to a lawsuit filed Wednesday in New York State Supreme Court (a copy of which you'll find below), Amex contends that Robert McCormick, 40, and three guests ran up the tab during a visit to the Scores nightclub in October 2003. McCormick, the chairman and chief executive of Savvis Communications, a publicly held technology firm, has refused to pay the strip club tab, which was placed on his corporate credit card. McCormick and his firm have claimed that only about $20,000 of the charges are legitimate.

But back on topic, aren't beers about 300 yen at Gaspanic? How do you ring up a US $8000 bill without buying about 2500 beers? Or do they sell something else there?

I have spent more than $8,000 on one tab more than once. But the issue here is doing it at Gas Panic. I am as a big a spender as the next guy but I don't know how to do it at Gaspanic unless I am buying for everyone. If I am spending that kind of money there better be a pussy or pussies somewhere near the end of the line.

You need a better investment counselor. I only paid $4,000 to watch two nuns jack-off a giraffe. And, unlike Jack, I have the receipts to prove it.

Oh, I admit it. I'm a dumb cunt. No two ways about it. I'm way out of your league Jack. Come to think of it, your in a totaly different sport.

I marvel at your posts. Pure genius. You have this uncany ability to both inform AND entertain at the same time. Take for example your post about how you have 'done' that exhibitionist chick who was busted down in Geekville Akihabara. Or that gem of a contribution about the guy you sat next to on the plane who explained the economic mystery behind the laws of supply and demand. Keep 'em coming Sensei!

Yeah my "average IQ" varies depending on the time of day, and the IQ of the person that I'm talking to. Are you trying to compile data for "The Bell Curve II"....like you need further discrediting.
In any event, my "IQ" is probably pretty low. They give PhDs in Evol. Genetics to just about anyone these days.

By the way IQ really means nothing....only Jack could pick such a useless statistic to try to annoy people with.
