That analysis indicated a high possibility the SARS coronavirus evolved over several decades from one that originally infected chickens, the researchers said.

The coronavirus apparently mutated during the incubation period after infecting chickens and other animals. Repeated mutations led to a coronavirus that infected humans. That virus then mutated and strengthened as a pathogen.
