Marty Friedman's J-Pop World

Road to the Deep East has a good review of Marty Friedman's new book, the title of which roughly translates as "J-Pop's Great! - It's Why I Came To Japan". The Amazon Japan linkImage includes a short video of Friedman introducing it in Japanese. In one part of the book, he ranks his 40 favourite J-pop songs. We already know from here that he is a fan of Perfume and their song "Polyrhythms" (the third video in that thread) is no.14 in his list. Road to the Deep East lists a few others from the list, mainly related to Aya Matsuura, and here are those currently on YouTube:

No.37 "Robo Kiss" by W
[YT]7h9dN0Zjh7k[/YT]

No.10 "Momoiro Kataomoi" by Aya Matsuura
[YT]mfTRBxASbB8[/YT]

No.7 "Yeah! Meccha Holiday" by Aya Matsuura
[YT]G1HeVNw3YPc[/YT]

No.4 "Nee?" by Aya Matsuura
[YT]KyVEcB1-j9Q[/YT]

No.3 "Chu! Natsu Party" by Sannin Matsuri
[YT]5AQUBMXx0nA[/YT]

It sounds like the book is worth a look. I'll probably pick up a copy sometime and will post some of Marty Friedman's other favourites from the list later. Meanwhile, here is his metal/enka collaboration with Sayuri Ishikawa:

Marty's getting a lot more time on the tube these days. I see him on Tamori's shows a lot.

Wow! That might be the first time I actually enjoyed Enka! Was that an original song or was it a Heavy Metal sendup of an existing song? All I could read is that it was a "Rock Version".

Japanese Music Just Got a Bit Weirder
Japantoday.com -- March 16, 2010
...
FANTA is a rock quintet with a pretty unusual lineup: former sumo yokozuna (grand champion) Akebono Taro (40) is a Tower of Power on drums]Marty Friedman (47), who's long since defected to the commercial dark side of J-pop[/B]; The Alfee guitarist Takamizawa Toshihiko (55), who leads the band and always looks like he's stuck in the 1970s; J-pop singer Tanimura Nana (22) adds not just vocals but beauty and considerable cleavageand on bass is Kishiden frontman Ayanokoji Sho... [who] couple of years ago in his guise as DJ Ozma, he was banned from the public network after he and his dancers appeared in bodysuits that fooled TV audiences into thinking they were naked.

Planet Japan. The videos are over the top with cloy cute. How much pink, stuffed animals, flowers, etc. can they cram into a video? It's surreal.

Obviously Tanimura Nana (22) is the sell out since she willing to hang out with a bunch of creepy, old guys.

Interesting point. But Marty seems more than a little sycophantic since he's settled in J-land. The guitarist for Megadeath kissing Hello Kitty ass?...come on that's just sad, no matter how much tail you might get out of it.

I see we have obvious differences in the importance of obtaining tail....

Please. The minute you sign a recording contract with a major label you're a sell out. Selling out is the goal of most pop/rock musicians. The guy got the job by audtioning to join an already successful band. How hardcore could a metal band be anyway with a guitarist named Marty Friedman? When I hear that name I picture a guy who talks like Woody Allen and works at an accounting firm.

Friedman could still be with Megadeath touring such exciting venues as these: http://www.megadeth.com/killingroad.php. Let's see, playing the Prarieland Exhibition Hall in Saskatoon, SK and getting head from a fat 45 year old redneck groupie in a filthy toilet stall or being a TV and pop star in the land of yellow beaver fever. Tough call.

Well, when you put it that way...:smoking:
I never was a Megadeath fan anyway. However I will say that I liked what he was doing with Enka when he first came here. That had a smidgen of class compared to the J-poop stuff he's promoting now.

Marty Friedman has put all his Megadeth era guitars up for sale on Ebay. That's ten years of guitars and he plans to donate the proceeds to quake relief.

US band Paramore are also using Ebay to raise money for Japan.
