Permanent residence status after divorce?

Postby TFG » Sat May 31, 2008 10:59 am

Well, after the divorce I have moved to another ward in the same area and wil shortly have to visit the ward office to change my address on the permanent residence visa resident card.

I don't think divorce is a problem while holding permanent residence but I am just wondering if anyone has had any experience with this?
Doubt one has to go to immigration and inform them about the divorce but am not sure about this. I am aware that those on spouse visas get their term of stay reduced or at least one guy I know did.

Anyone have experience of divorce on a PR visa and did they have to inform immigration or not?

Why dont you just remarry one of those Norikos on FGF you and Jack were telling us about?

And just how would that help in this situation?
It wouldn't and would simply complicate the situation.

I was checking the Immigration Bureau website but couldn't seem to find anything pertaining to your question. You might take a look yourself (although you may have already done that). At the very least you should be able to find the phone number of an office that could answer your question if no one around here has any answers.

Good luck.

Yes, I did check that site out but it is rather general.
Thanks for the info though.

I will probably just go down to the ward office on Monday and see what they have to say.

No experience, but I'm pretty sure I know the rules, I've read a lot of the pertinent immigration laws (but IANAL), and the answer is "no". Chill! You're fine. Your alien registration card *does* list your resident status (在留の資格) as permanent resident (永住者), not spouse (配偶者), right?

Your PR status has got nothing to do with your ex-wife, employment, income, or anything like that. That's why it's called "permanent". Typically the only ways to lose PR status are:

1) Leave the country without a re-entry permit (or let the permit expire while you're out).
2) Get in trouble with the law.

I wouldn't waste time visiting any government offices. They will just laugh and send you on your way. Or if they don't know the answer at first, they will do a lot of teeth sucking, and then keep you waiting for an hour while they make phone calls and come to the same conclusion.

I never suggested that it would help you. And I'm not one to judge. But I'm finding it difficult to feel sorry for your 'issue' when you get online and boast about how you banged heaps of norikos you picked up online in your matrimonial bed while your wife was away.

In any case, I dont know what you are worried about. You are not on a spouse visa, right. You are a permanent resident, so unless you break the law (and do something that warrants deportation), or leave Japan for a period longer than the re-entry permit in your current passport, what the fuck is your visa issue?

Get back to banging Norikos.

Personally, I like the teeth sucking noise. Once I hear it, I know immediately one of three things.
1) This person has no clue what the answer to my question is.
2) This person is about to give me some bad news. Not that I like bad news, but at least I know that something I don't want to hear is about to come out.
3) This person has no spinal cord and with further prodding would quickly de-evolve into a mollusk.

At that point, I pretty much stop paying attention to anything they are saying.

Then just why did you suggest it?
And as for "feeling sorry for me" whatever gives you the idea I would like anyone to feel sorry for me?

Be honest! We all want someone to pat us on the back and reassure us that everything will be ok. Even more preferable is that the girl who does his can do rhythm gymnastics in bed after such assurance has been bestowed upon us.

Nope, I am afraid not.
I simply wanted to know if any other FG's had any experience in this situation.

Instead, all I got was a poor lesson in morals, which was hardly necessary nor warranted, given the situation I found myself in a while back.

One day, you may find yourself in a similar situation.

Been there done that, got several t-shirts. But, as for the visa, I think Omae Mono was spot on. You are not sponsored in that visa, so a divorce/separation will not have the gray area problems that a spouse visa might cause. You are not applying for a new or different visa. All you have to do is go to the city/ward office and fill out a change of address form. They normally just ink it in on the back of your card with a han stamp and that's it.

By the correct course, are you referring to the outer course or the inter course?

There but for the grace of God go I, but whatever problems my wife and I might have in the future, I can confidently say that I will NEVER be banging chicks in our bed while I'm married to her. I just dont think that will ever "happen" to me.

That and all situations was/were experienced about 1.5 years ago. The only thing I learned is that divorce does improve your sex life, or at least mentally you feel you are grudge-fucking your ex, by piledriving the new girl. Aside from that.........no t-shirt commemorating any of the events.

You're golden, don't even worry about it.

But, bear in mind that all these decisions made at city hall level are administrative decisions. Not Legal decisions. What that means is that the authorities have discretion to decide any case in any way they want (within the rules). Therefore the best bet is to never mention your divorce and just be nice.

If you're referring to the mysterious Glenski that seems to pop-up and appears almost mystically in numerous "How to do eikaiwa" posts scattered around the net, I would welcome the PR, as I am quite a bit older, so I appreciate any notoriety as it helps attract goats!

As my post is also above, I'll accept your "compliment" as a comment which was as well thought out as your present arrangement. You don't like being alone, do you?

Come on everyone... TFG had some hard times and took a lot of shit here on FG, including from me.

In hindsight I shouldn't have said a lot of the things I said to him at that time. Everyone goes through hard times and sometimes when everything seems to be going to hell things just snowball. If it hasn't happened to you yet it could at any time.

TFG, congratulations on your marriage, I hope life continues to be great for you.

No, I was talking about KO.

Thanks folks.....As FGL said, it can happen to anyone...The point is, when it happens to you, can you get out of it?

I did, and am certainly much better off than before.
