Japanese School Caves to 'Monster' Parents, Gives All Kids Lead in School Play

Image

For the audience of menacing mothers and feisty fathers, though, the sight of 25 Snow Whites, no dwarfs and no wicked witch was a triumph: a clear victory for Japan's emerging new class of “Monster Parents."

For they had taken on the system and won. After a relentless campaign of bullying, hectoring and nuisance phone calls, the monster parents had cowed the teachers into submission, forcing the school to admit to the injustice of selecting just one girl to play the title role.

Across Japan teachers are reporting an astonishing change in the character of parents, who, after decades of respectful silence, have become a super-aggressive army of complainers.

Yomiuri: Violence drives medics to quit
More than 270 hospital workers quit their jobs in fiscal 2006 after being physically or verbally abused in the course of their work, according to a survey of hospitals that belong to the Tokyo Metropolitan Hospitals Association. The survey was conducted in November, and covered 344 hospitals, of which 210 national, public and private hospitals gave valid responses. The survey revealed 273 people quit because of violence by patients, with a total 2,674 cases of physical violence by patients reported over the year. Such cases suggest that one reason for the lack of doctors and nurses, an increasingly serious problem nationwide, is in-hospital violence. The survey also found that 182 hospitals reported a total of 7,641 complaints from patients alleging poor service. Of these, patients refused to pay medical and test expenses in 727 cases at 123 hospitals. In many cases, patients refused to pay charges for private rooms upon their discharge from hospital, claiming they did not receive adequate service. Some patients insisted they should not have to pay for a bed, while others said they were not satisfied with the attitude of and treatment provided by doctors and nurses.

Based on the survey results, the association has created pocket manuals to help hospitals deal with difficult patients, and will distribute them to the member hospitals in the near future. The manual also sets out ways to deal with in-hospital violence. The advice includes suggestions such as "keep a distance from the offender and ask for help," and "make a note of when and why the violence occurred and report it to a supervisor"...The Shizuoka Hospitals Association held its first symposium on physical and verbal violence by patients in January, with police officers and lawyers taking part in discussions about the best way to solve such problems. An official of the Shizuoka Board of Education who participated in the symposium talked about how schools deal with complaints from students' parents...more...
