Japanese company invents car that runs on water

Reuters Published: Friday, June 13, 2008

TOKYO -- Tired of gasoline prices rising daily at the pump? A Japanese company has invented an electric-powered, and environmentally friendly, car that it says runs solely on water. .. ..more..

Notice that Jason is driving the "car powered by water."

The incorrectly written/translated original Reuters article has created a huge flap on the Internet (Slashdot, etc.) for a couple of days now. The Genepax-Mobile is just another fuel-cell car that in this case is powered by extracting hydrogen from water with electricity. Genepax uses a membrane electrode assembly (MEA)genepax.co.jp ---nifty, but not exactly running a car on water for "free." My guess is that original Reuters article saying the car was "powered by water" was an intentional plant of misleading information by Genepax to gain publicity.

What is up with the Jason mask on the driver? Do you have to be a homicidal maniac to drive the car. No wait that describes most of the taxi drivers I know.

  • Traditional Japanese shyness?
  • Light-weight replacement for airbags?
  • Low cost crash-test dummy?
  • Subliminal advertising?

They say it works by pouring water in and an "energy generator" that removes hydrogen from the water to release electrons. The problem is nobody is asking what's powering the machine that breaks the water apart. Probably gasoline

Looks like instead of leaving 1 hour early for work, you'd have to leave 3 hours early. Looks like it gets 25 mph on the sidewalk.
:p
And then bottled water will be $4.00 a gallon

This nothing new. It takes battery power for electrolysis that removes the Hydrogen from the water.

Energy in (battery recharge) <> energy out
Tha only advantage is if you had a highly efficient, non poluting public utility source.
