I need to get the hell out of Tokyo

Postby Samurai_Jerk » Wed Jun 25, 2008 11:47 pm

OK, guys. I'm burnt out and need a short vacation. I think I'm going to take a long weekend in July and head to the boonies without my cell phone or laptop. I have no interest in onsens, the beach, or tourist attractions. I just need a cheap minshuku or something about three hours max out of town by regular train (not shinkansen). A small mountain town with nothing to do would be ideal. And when I say nothing, I mean nothing. I just need a weekend alone with a book and some greenery.

Any suggestions?

If it's good enough for the Emperor and his family for their summer hols, then try Tochigi. Hour and a bit by usual train, nice and quiet setting in the mountains. http://www.pref.tochigi.jp/intro/gaikokugo/english/englishtop.html

If you are a resident of Shibuya Ward, you might wanna check out Hinoharamura. The town owns an old abandoned school building there which it lets its residents stay in 3 days at a time for free. If you're not a resident you can take a chance anyway since no one will ask for your gaijin card. Just book in advance at the Shibuya Ward office.

There will be no internet, no konbini and no cell phone coverage. There will be trees, a small stream, huge (class) rooms and a big ass kitchen which you can use freely. Oh, and lights out at eleven!

I thought about that as well, but after a while, said the hell with it and went to Roppongi and got laid. Always seems to solve the problem.

Who is thus guy, Gen. James N. Mattis, do you know him? - he sounds a lot like my old man.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_N._Mattis

On February 1, 2005, Lieutenant General Mattis, speaking at a forum in San Diego, apparently said "You go into Afghanistan, you got guys who slap women around for five years because they didn't wear a veil. You know, guys like that ain't got no manhood left anyway. So it's a hell of a lot of fun to shoot them. Actually, it's a lot of fun to fight. You know, it's a hell of a hoot. It's fun to shoot some people. I'll be right upfront with you, I like brawling." Mattis's remarks sparked controversy and General Michael W. Hagee, Commandant of the Marine Corps, issued a statement suggesting that Mattis should have chosen his words more carefully, but would not be disciplined.

I sold out. I deciced I needed to get the fuck out of Japan so I'm going to stay with a friend in Korea for a few days. That should guarantee I'll be even more stressed out and angry after my vacation. ;)

For a break from Tokyo

Postby uchimizu » Tue Jul 08, 2008 5:39 am

Hey,

why not just go to the Ome valley to do some hiking. This is perfect to relax, and you can bring your book in your backpack.

You may also want to head for the very laid-back Oigawa valley in Shizuoka prefecture. There is a nice steam locomotive to go there, and you may find a cheap and very calm ryokan.
