UPDATE: Americans win in penalty shootout over Japan

A day after winning its playoff match over New Zealand in extra time, the United States beat Japan 4-2 on penalty strokes Saturday to clinch ninth place at the women's field hockey World Cup.

After the teams were scoreless in regular and extra time, the United States took a 2-0 lead in the penalty stroke shootout after Japan failed to score on its first two chances.

On Sunday, Argentina plays the Netherlands for the championship while Australia takes on China for third place.

have been meaning to post this for ages and it kept slipping my mind. a former student of mine is on the women's olympic field hockey team headed for beijing.

i have yet to cross that line.. this is much too small a town for that.. unfortunately
