Japanese voted best tourists in the world

Reuters, London wrote:
The best tourists in the world are the Japanese, followed by Americans and the Swiss, a survey based on views from hoteliers across Europe said on Wednesday.

Japanese tourists stood out for being polite and tidy, securing 35 percent more votes than the Americans who came second.

Swiss tourists were commended for being quiet and considerate, unlike the Britons who were judged to be the fifth worst tourists because of rude behaviour, noise and a miserly attitude to tipping.

But despite their faults, hoteliers do look favourably upon British spending habits voting them the third biggest holiday spenders after Americans and Russians.

Based on responses from 15,000 European hoteliers, the survey carried out on behalf of travel Web site Expedia showed that the worst tourist nation was France, followed by India, China and Russia.

Britain was second in the worst-dressed tourist table which was headed by the Americans, and fifth in the least-generous table which was headed by the Germans . . . more

Ah, but if you take away their "follow-me" flags, it all unravels very quickly!

I'm surprised Americans came in second. Aren't Americans supposed to represent the epitome of the boorish, loud tourist who expect everyone to speak English?

I'm not surprised that Americans came in first in the worst-dressed category, though. Every time I travel, I cringe when I see other Americans wearing the shorts with the tucked in polo shirt, a baseball cap, knee high tube socks and white sneakers. They're recognizable from a mile away. It's god awful.

Not surprising at all when you've seen British, Dutch, Russians or Chinese on holiday. :shroom:

The Dutch rank pretty highly on the list of most boorish tourists I met in Japan. But nothing can come close to ozzies.

Someday I'll have to tell the full story of the ozzie who terrorized the hotel I was staying at in Tokyo. But I'll just fast-forward to the finale: he skipped out, fleeing the hotel without paying his bill, when his little 6 year old brat smashed the laptop in their computer lounge.

Normally I would feel embarrassed, but hearing you say that fills me with pride instead. I don't know why.

I don't know if I could handle hearing yet again the story of how chuckles was traumatised for life by a little girl.

I wonder if this vote was taken among members of the Japan Overseas Hotel Association?

One reason why Japanese tourists are popular among British hoteliers is that they can be given some of the worst rooms and will rarely complain. I've been shocked to see the state of some rooms friends have been allocated at allegedly high class places. It's quiet clear that the staff know they are below standard: as soon as I raise the issue with the management, they immediately offer a new room or a substantial discount.

And also apparantly Japanese businessmen are always the first ones to be bumped, particularly at London hotels, if the hotel is overbooked. The reason given is they never complaint which has to do with their inability to communicate effectively in English. They rather put up with the crap than having to figure out how to complain.

But I heard that when the said tourists go back to Japan the travel agent there gets an earfull.

Working in tourism in NZ the worst toursits i encountered were Indians - demanding, complained alot, messy, and were never happy. Chinese/Taiwanese always bought their own noodles from home and used all hot water filling them. Americans were hit or miss - they were either really lovely and so polite and enjoyed themselves or they were cranky, demanding, and always saying how much better America was.

Best tourists were Koreans - they always laughed and got really into it, and most western Europeans were generally pretty good.

Japanese were polite except when demanding beer, and they were very clean. But they often failed to really get excited or appear to enjoy themselves

Of course these are just generalisations from my personal experience in NZ

I think Americans score well because we tip better than eveyone and tend to tip out of habit even if service sucks.

I agree. My wife is currently working at a hotel that gets a lot of international guests, and she says that nobody tips as well as Americans, especially businessmen from the midwest who are talking to a pretty Japanese girl for the first time. She will often get tips exceeding 50% of the bill. The worst tippers, according to her, are the Japanese salarymen.

Ichigo: Your experience with American tourists abroad is so spot on; it's seriously one or the other with them. I notice this quite a bit when traveling.

Does your wife get many black customers? Eveyone says they're the worst tippers.

Japanese guys do tip poorly but I'll bet it's even worse since your wife is Japanese. They think that she'll understand if they don't tip.

Yup, Japanese simply expect to be waited on well, and if they do cough up a tip it is exactly the amount their guide book calls for.

As far as black customers, she gets a few and hasn't met one that hasn't tried hitting on her. The few she's had did give meager tips, and twice she's been given by black customers random miscellaneous gifts, like company t-shirts and other shitty souvenirs...haha, I could only hope my wife was impressed with so little.

Japanese people have no culture of tipping so it would not be expected of them to be good tippers. Canadians on the other hand, must be the cheapest right up there with Japanese men. Everyone says Canadians don't tip well. I try to increase the average especially if it's a cute J-girl.

Yeah, in Canada it seems to be very much based on the percieved quality of service. If one thinks the service was excellent, one tends to tip in the 15% range. If it was average, maybe 10%. Poor service is tipped poorly or not at all.

Americans lead the way with putting effort into learning a few key sayings in the local language and sampling local delicacies.

Interesting. That goes against the stereotype and my experience with "my fellow 'mercans".
