Goin' to Kobe!

I'm headed to Kobe tomorrow and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations on where to visit. I'm going to be there for a month. Any Kansai region delecacies you recommend? If you know the Green Hotel, anything near there?
Why do the Japanese always have to have a favorite saying?

Depends of course on what you want to see...
Definitely get out to Himeji if you want to see a good example of a Japanese castle. Very nice. There's nothing else to see in Himeji besides the castle though, but it is good and pretty original. Don't bother with Osaka castle. Looks nice from a distance, especially at night, but in reality it's a concrete replica.
From Kobe you can easily get to Kyoto via JR and there are unlimited things to see there...
If you'd like to see a bit more of present day Japan then head to Amemura in Osaka. It's west of Shinsaibashi station, but if you ask any young Japanese they will tell you in more detail I'm sure.
Kobe has a good Chinatown too actually (so I've heard, I've only been through once). 2nd in size to Yokohama's.
For nearby beaches Suma is the best but will be crowded over the summer. Should be lots of eye candy walking around in bikinis though.

If you are there until August 15th I would recommand getting across the Akashi Bridge and going to Tokushima for Awa Odori August 12-15. It is well worth the visit.
In Kobe itself, Kitano is worth a visit althought it is touristy.

Amemura!!!

If you are spending time in the Kansai region its well worth going to 'Ame-mura' (Abreviated from American mura as in American Village) in the heart of Osaka just for an afternoon stroll.
Its fun to just sit on the pavement and people watch: You get the maddest young people wondering around wearing wierd stuff. I don't mean 'normal' wierd like in Harajuku, I mean REAL wierd! The Goths and Lolitas have upped a few notches in their fashion statements. You also get random rastas wondering around.
The place reaks of skunk these days and you can actually buy seeds.
A lot of whorish J-gals who are very chatty and friendly. (Even to gaijin girls for a change).
Lots of random bizarre shops too to keep you entertained too.
Awaji Island is nice too. A lot quieter but the Akashikaikyo Bridge is beautiful at night with colour changing lights (although road toll ridiculously expensive). Beaches are nice and you can go see huge whirlpools under the glass bridge to tokushima. The Izanagi temple is allegedly... according to folklore is first island made by god. Also first and most important temple in Japan or something. Another contradicting folklore is that its a man made island made from the land dug out from that big hole on the main island to make a stepping stone to Tokushima back in the day. whats that place called again?

Mr Kobayashi: First, I experienced a sort of overpowering feeling whenever I was in the room with foreigners, not to mention a powerful body odor coming from them. I don't know whether it was a sweat from the heat or a cold sweat, but I remember I was sweating whenever they were around.

If you are going to be in Kansai for a month then there is one thing you should not miss, Tenjin-Matsuri. The 24th and 25th of July I think. It is the second biggest festival in Japan I believe and lots of fun to be had with a big fireworks show at the end. It goes right past my house and I usually watch the fireworks from the stairway of our building because it is soooo crowded in the heart of it all but definately a blast.

Speaking of fireworks... The Yodogawa Fireworks are on August 6th this year and are a great show worth seeing. About a trillion people there of course but the fireworks are great!

I used to live right in front of the river where the barges light the Yodogawa fireworks (Umeda side of the river), and worked only 5 minutes walk away from the Tenjin matsuri fireworks. They're both lots of fun to see, but as a tourist if you had to pick one, you should go to the Tenjin matsuri.

Mount Rokko in Kobe

If you have some time to spare in Kobe, I strongly recommend going to Mount Rokko, which gives probably one of the nicest views on a Japanese city. It can be coupled to a trip in Arima onsen too.

Get yourself to kyoto on the 15th to 18th i believe it is in the evening for Gion Matsuri! Trains will probaly be busy as hell but its worth seeing!
