Image Tokyo Seeks to Crack Down on Undocumented Foreigners, NHK Says
June 12 (Bloomberg) -- The Tokyo metropolitan government is calling on Japan's immigration officers to crack down on undocumented workers more harshly as the number of crimes committed by foreigners rises... Tokyo Governor Shintaro Ishihara, is calling on the national government to build more detention centers for people who live in Japan illegally...

Ah, love this bit:
The local government also said many students overstay their visas while other people fabricate marriages with Japanese nationals, NHK said.
How are they going to make that determination?

How do they make that determination in most countries?

Isn't it always a case of being kept waiting on a temporary permit until an interview which if you don't stuff up guarantees you your residency? (unless you're an Arab in the US, in which case you're kept locked up until you're deported  )

Sounded ominous to me... it's not that hard to imagine Herr Ishihara pulling foreigners off the street and declaring their marriages "fabricated" before shipping them off in leather restraints to Nagoya. 8O

I thought it was the top two floors of that lovely new building near Shinagawa with the wonderful padded play areas for the kiddies.

Only kept waiting 2 hours on Monday

Hey, only 2 hours is doing ok for the visa renewal. My record renewal time was 40 minutes.... and my worst was 2 full days sitting and waiting. In just a few more renewals, they'll give ya 1 year visa rather than a ?6? month one.

I'm not here long enough to require renewing (got 18 months more than I need on my visa). This was re-entry permits for the family who are abandoning me for 6 weeks.

SMART family you have. They will miss the droolling dog pooping part of the Japanese year, HELL SUMMER without aircon. Besides, being a wild-n-wacko "summer bachelor"has been a fine FG tradition for past 100+ years.

On my first renewal, they stamped in 3 years.

I was like, COOL. I just walked in, spoke some Japanese to them and the old guy at the desk must have remembered me, cuz he saw I had all my paperwork and stamped me and out the door I went. I didn't have to wait in any lines either.

Hachinohe is a major port so they have an immigration office there. However, most sailors don't get off the boat. So they don't have much to do.

In fact, beside the plastic covered computer in the corner, there was a black joystick. :D Wonder what they do on the days they know no ships are coming in?

As for fabrication of marriage, that's not hard to determine. Most married people live WITH their spouses. So that's easy to check. And in the cases where they don't, like some Japanese men work in Tokyo while their families live hundreds of miles away. A simple phone call to the spouse can clear up any misunderstanding.

Yeah, man, Japan is the only place in the world where xenophobes ran rampant after a natural disaster. It is just crazy there man. Thank God for Debito. He will make the Japanese start thinking like your countrymen. Pretty soon, lawyers will reign and we will have two faced liars running around making smiley faces at all the foreigners like you!

Again folks, what is the story

Postby Gaisaradatsuraku! » Fri Jun 13, 2003 2:39 am

What is the story? What, should illegal aliens have the right to just come, go and work like they please. To clog up public hospitals, to send their kids to public schools, to collect welfare?

There are immigration laws in every country. Nobody has a God given right to live anywhere but where they were born (and sometimes they get kicked out too!).

What is the deal with you people. If the US were better at enforcing its immigration laws 9/11 probably wouldn't have happened.

Japanese police arrested or tried to arrest 2,027 foreign nationals last year, 40 percent more than the year before, the report said, without saying where it obtained the information. Of those, one in four were illegal aliens, according to the state-run broadcasting network.

Judging by quote from the Bloomberg story, maybe 500 illegal aliens in one year. I wonder how that compares to numbers in the U.S..?!? This reeks like a political stunt.. pandering to the Oyaji's for their vote.

Dear Cocksucking Blackasscat,

You dumbass piece of self obsessed bilge. Why don't you explore the overwhelming number of Japanese who are actually quite accomodating instead of concentrating on the bad aspects. Why, it is because you are a fucking dumbass.
