Inflation of Electricity in Japan

The days of electricity bills at 5,000 yen/month are long over

TEPCO considers 800 yen price hike

Tokyo Electric Power Co. announced Monday that as part of changes to its charging system it would raise electricity bills by about 800 yen to 7,600 yen a month for a standard household from January if crude oil prices remain at their current high levels.

The fee increase is based on the assumption that the average price of imported crude oil for July to September will work out at 130 dollars per barrel and that the exchange rate will be 105 yen against the dollar.

The increase of 800 yen would be the largest since April 1980 when the second oil crisis forced TEPCO to raise the level by 2,846 yen, calculated in terms of the current standard household bill.

Electricity bills for the July-September period are expected to be 6,797 yen a month for an average four-person household, according to TEPCO.

TEPCO will introduce a new charging system from September, which will become effective in electricity bills in October, but the current rate relating to fluctuations in the price of crude oil will not be increased at this stage as a measure to lessen the impact of the changes, TEPCO said.

The new system, the first major change to the way electricity is charged in two years and five months, is designed to better reflect crude oil price hikes in electricity charges.

There are two types of changes being made to the charging structures of the nation's electric power companies: one based on a fuel cost adjustment formula that will reflect changes in fuel costs once every three months and other changes made at the discretion of management.

I heard that on the news this morning along with their explanations and sob stories as to why they had to make this "small" increase. Sure! That comes under the heading of those great promises like the checks in the mail and I won't come in your mouth. It'll probably be another couple thousand by the time the new budgets are written and everyone gets their cut of the new anticipated revenue staked out.

A big yen increase like this is BS, it will hurt consumer spending and damage small business

but I think a small increase might be necessary, I also think Nuclear energy is a necessary evil in Japan. Especially if we all want to ween ourselves off the addiction to Middle Eastern Oil. The old Nuclear reactors should be phased out and the structures need to be moderenized and maybe it should be back by gov money if necessary. Japan should also look to alternative energy like Tidal power. There are so many land-locked nations who are jealous of Japan's access to the sea, you see so ghastly tetrapods everwhere already so why don't they use the tidal energy from coastlines? Another stock is doing shit today as Kansai Power Co is also rumored to be in the shitter

In other electric news the train system has shut down in Kanazawa and 3,000 people near Asano River have been left without electricity. Lots of rain landslides reported...etc when the people from this place recover they will get fucked up the ass with a 800 yen hike
