So the use of racist terms has been banned? Fair enough, but where does it stop? Some people have said they find the word "Gaijin" offensive. I know some people find the word "Fucked" offensive.

As a black man, I have actually lost black friends who, when I asked that they not call me the n-word in casual "friendly" conversation, they thought I was crazy. They literally felt it was their right to call me the n-word, and if I didn't accept it, I was in some sort of denial. To them, it was just slang, and to me, that signaled that they were mentally asleep. And yes, many blacks use the word. And yes, I think they are all asleep at the wheel for using the word as slang. Contrast that with the fact that I have 'never' been called the n-word by a white person. If it ever happened, calling them cr-cker or h-nky would hardly make me feel any better, as someone said, it really doesn't have the same effect and most white people don't even key in on those words as highly offensive. I've heard many black people espouse the notion that using a derogatory term for one's self takes the power from it. But I disagree. I think in a perfect world, where philosophical constructs ruled, yes, this could work. But in our real world, I don't think it works. When I see young black kids calling each other the n-word, I am absolutely angered, embarrassed, and saddened all at once. Because of all this, I am hyper-sensitive to callling anyone the j-word, g-word, or any other (fill in space) word. I don't think it's ever a good idea.

Wrong! There's now a filter in place which alters your messages. So regardless of whether the rascist term is being used in a rascist way it will be modified.

examples:
- Can I use Gook too?
- Is Jap offensive?
- How about when referring to things?, e.g. jap import

Welcome to the imperfections of "democracy"; As a community grows, a couple idiots can destroy utopia; A few basic 'guidelines' have to be established to keep a majority of the members happy.. Or they leave.

Another poll. Do you find the word "slut" offensive? Let's say the women on this forum answer yes and the men say no (about 90% No)... so it stays. Luckily the women on the forum aren't so delicate as to leave if someone called them a slut, so we're still blessed by their company. But what if they were deeply offended? Would a decision be made against the majority?

The forum is not a democracy, and I wouldn't want it to be.

I never intended the thread to lead to this. I was just curious if other members cringed as much as I did when I kept reading j-this or bang a j-that.. In a subtle way, I wanted to show the people throwing around the slurs that most people don't think they're as 'cool' as they think they are when they say it.

Slut is a fairly nasty word if used against somebody who takes pride in her reputation (obviously not myself.. ^_^ )

It really is a strange term as most girls are taught that "nice girls don't" which is a crock of shit in my opinion, and leads to a heap of fucked up people with some serious sexual hangups. But then this is also used as amunition against women who seem to be strong and confident, but really it does cut to the quik as there is still that little voice in the back of your head that feeds on insecurity. So while slut is not a racial slur, it really can be used as a "cultural" slur.

Well.. I'm a little late to this thread and at risk of making a simple suggestion: Why don't people just use JPN instead..?!? If your just looking for a 3 letter abbreviation, that would seem to be more suitable (like USA or NZ). Unless the writers intention is a racial slur at which point they lose all credibility by using slander instead of intellect to make a point.

Even though a worse form of racism can be disguised as discussion without using such terminology.

It's interesting to me that, if you add them up, somehow there's not one jewish slur and I didn't really see an italian or irish slur. Interesting dontcha think? Hmmm.
