BTW, did you know brean in spanish is pan?

probably because originally, bread arrived to japan from some country whose language originated from latin (france, italy...), i supposed. not the other way around...

I think the katakana "pan" comes from "pain", the French word for bread (but not "pain" as in "pain in the ass"). Because, of course, French bread is the most famous kind, right?

Similarly, the katakana "tabako" comes from the Portuguese word "tobacco"(sp?) and is used primarily to mean "cigarette". I always thought it was the English word for tobacco with no additional meaning, but considering that the Portuguese were here before the British and the Dutch, it sort of makes sense.
