I like how Tani did beat this guy (Wu Shugen) in one of the prelim rounds.

and yeah, the Olympics trails behind the Georgia-Russia War and Bernie Mac's death.

I don't know if anyone else caught the BB gun shooting event earlier. There was no dress code/team uniforms so you can where whatever you wanted like T-shirts and jeans. Anyway, the whole time I was watching this casual match-up (and it was a torture now that I think about it), I swore it was like watching the darts championship or the poker world series on ESPN.

Yeah. I starting having Jim Rome flashbacks, "Bowling is not a sport, nothing is a sport when your score goes up in proportion to the amount of beer you've consumed or in proportion to the size of your gut."

I loved the opening ceremony. I knew the commercials would be maddening so I just set the DVR and let it run for the 4-5 hour event while I went out for the evening. Watched it all this morning, sans CMs and really liked it. The 2008 lit drums and sticks were incredible if not a little bit imposing.

NBC's coverage has been good enough so far...I LOVE watching everything in HD, it makes a world of difference when you can actually see ass-sweat on the volleyball players.

We DVRd it too, but I would have liked to see the transitions between the different segments. I'll have to get a DVD of the ceremonies uncut.

I loved it, too. I thought some of the sets were a little busy (like all the lines on the upper rim screen) but still spectacular.

This has probably been mentioned already but can yall believe that BULLSHIT with not allowing Joey Cheeks in the country?

Already the Japanese press is bitching about Tani's loss. They are blaming the judges, saying that nothing really went on only slapping and grabbing. I think someone said something like that about 4 pages ago. It is a dull as dishwater. Speaking of proxy servers, how does one exactly go about logging onto one. I haven&t tried the CBC site yet, but during the Stanley Cup Finals, you had to be in Canada to view them.

Did anyone else notice the comment before Tani's first match with American judo player Sayaka Matsumoto? I can't remember exactly what it was in Japanese but translated it was something like this: "Since Matsumoto is a Nikkei it'll be eaisier for Tani than taking on a European player." I thought I misheard and had my girlfriend repeat it for me. I couldn't fucking believe it.

Anyway, it looks like W is enjoying the Olympics.

Gotta give him credit, the old boy knows how to party with the best of them. At least he doesn't have to be subjected to the constant assault of watching Judo 24/7

I have an insufferable gf today. In team sports, Japan lost to the US in both mens' and women's soccer and to the US women's volleyball team. She is punishing me today by making me watch judo and trying to justify how all of these losses will be overcome when Japan's baseball team and softball team beat the US later next week.

All I care about is the US basketball game tonight against China. Think BS-1 is doing the right thing and broadasting it live at about 11pm. If they don't, I have another reason not to pay NHK.

1) I'm betting there's an outside chance you get to see the US-China basketball game. Wish I had BS;

2) When the US plays Japan in baseball, it's a no win situation for Japan. The US team is made up of a mix between second tier minor league prospects and over-the-hill ex-prospects who never really panned out. If Japan loses it's a serious embarassment for Japanese baseball;

3) Japan's softball team WON'T beat the US team.

I have to give credit where it's due; NHK did an great job with the Opening Ceremony - no CMs, relatively little chatter, and the whole thing live and unedited..

Agreed!

Apparently NBC managed to make an abortion of the whole thing. They had commercial interruptions during the performance, then edited the athletes' march in order to put the US entrance at a more "ratings favorable" time.

I wish I'd been able to see the ceremony in HD, but I'm sure I'll get a chance at that soon enough. ;)

fuck yeah !

you'd be insane to miss volleyball

May-Treanor jokingly bent over and offered Bush a chance to give her a spank on her rear -- a custom in many sports for players to offer each other encouragement.

Instead, he playfully used the back of his hand to tap her on the small of her back.

I , for one, was not that impressed. At least in the Mass Games, the totalitarian vision was clearly impressed upon the audience and not watered down. Zhang Yi Mou is a great director, but he clearly kowtowed in this one. Lest not anyone forget that the actual people who built the stadium were not allowed in it. I asked some of the workers around the place (a week before) and they were all pretty pissed on having to leave Beijing given that they had just worked 24/7 to make it happen. Go China, yeah!
