There's a curious article over on J-Cast (Japanese). "Is Japan becoming a nation of hafu?" asks the title. The question is prompted by recent government data indicating that one child in thirty born in Japan now has at least one foreign parent. The article notes the prominence of hafu entertainers and sportsmen and ponders some of the implications. The real curiosity is that the article puts great emphasis on the number of white guys marrying Japanese girls when most studies have indicated that the largest group of international marriages are Japanese men marrying Asian brides. The Deputy Chairman of an NPO called The International Marriage Association talks about a tenfold increase in Americans and Europeans marrying Japanese girls over the last five years which he attributes to the girls going abroad for language study and an increasing number of men working in Japan for overseas companies. The article recognizes that Japanese men are marrying Asians but dismisses this group as widowers, old guys who have divorced or hick farmers. All in all, Japanese guys don't come out too well from the piece because it also compares penniless neets unfavourably with these "elite foreigners".

On a positive note, interracial mixing is a good thing for all societies, including Japan, so it is good to hear that it is on the increase.

From a genetic standpoint mixed-breed dogs, cats are generally healthier than most "pure breeds" (and humans, even J-humans, are animals after all).

From a societal viewpoint, it's even better, I think. When hafus finally become the majority Japan will have to find another group to look down on. (maybe the blue-eyed minority?) Anyhow, in another hundred years or so, we're all probably gonna be a healthy and attractive toasty beige, which is, I think to the benefit of all mankind.

I do find all the J-fretting funny, though, especially since they were never a pure race to begin with - last I read they are a genetic mix of Korean and Ainu. (gasp!!)
