Carved wooden saury fish were used at the event instead of the usual frozen fish due to strong criticism from fishermen and citizens over the use of real food.

At least they could let the winner throw one real fish.

I'm betting a frozen flat fish, or a small frozen halibut could go pretty far. I imagine there must have been rules on species of fish thrown.

It had to be a saury, which is a word I'd never heard of before I came to Japan and was told it was English for sanma.

Would that be Alain Saury?

That is so fucking stupid. No one's going hungry because a couple of frozen mackerel get tossed around. Personally, I'd rather see an event where you bludgeon Greenpeace and PETA members to death with said fish.

Couple of dozen, more like.

And yeah, some people did go hungry. Public money was spent on flinging fish that couldn't be reused, instead of a fish feast for the festival. So those people who might have had fish, went hungry.
