Marvel To Create Japanese Superheroes.

Postby Mulboyne » Tue Aug 26, 2008 1:12 am

BusinessWeek: Marvel teams with Japanese anime studio Madhouse
Marvel Entertainment Inc. said Monday it is partnering with Japanese anime studio Madhouse Inc. to create characters inspired by Marvel Universe for the Japanese market. The effort is meant to help grow the exposure of Marvel's comic book character franchises internationally. The characters will be visually adapted to suit the anime style, and their backstories and histories will interweave Japanese culture and history. Madhouse is now producing the first of four new series, which are scheduled to launch in spring 2010. The initial series will feature characters including Iron Man and Wolverine, among others. The Marvel anime series will debut on Animax, the first and largest 24-hour network dedicated to anime. The two companies will also explore related merchandising initiatives.

Any ideas? How about Gaman Guy - he can take shit from anyone. Or maybe The Prevaricator - for when things get muzukashii. Oshibori Man is already taken.

Instead of Gaman Guy, he should be "Ga Man," a man who can transform himself into a moth. There's the play on words "gaman" and "Ga Man" and the ability to freak out any Japanese villain.

Then there's Storm's arch-nemesis, the Tooth Sucker, a salaryman with the ability to create windstorms by sucking air through the enormous gaps in his teeth.

Also, the Incredible "Hurk", a sumo-sized behemoth whose strength was enhanced by yellow radiation.

And finally, there's Captain Japan, with extraordinary nanpa abilities and....oh, wait, he's actually a member of FG! ;)

Hm... I can't see why "Lady Deathstrike," "Silver Samurai," and "Sunfire" aren't plenty good enough. Just give them big googley eyes and huge hair in day-glo colors and I'm sure it will go over just fine. :p

The only thing that gives me hope that this might work is Marvel's work on Spiderman India. It was a short, limited run series that reinvented Peter Parker as Pavitr Prabhakar, a poor Indian boy who lives with his Aunt Maya in Mumbai. While not the greatest reinvention, it did enough things right to remain interesting throughout its run.

The Marvel Mangaverse on the other hand... a picture is truly worth a thousand words.

Too bad Dance*Man and HardGay are already taken...that would put a spin on how American Superheroes would look upon their Japanese counterparts :)

With Marvel's recent movie sucesses it really seems intent on expanding globally.

Wonder if it will ever turn into a mega conglomerate monster like Disney someday.
