Nobu Still Serving Endangered Bluefin Tuna

[floatl]Image[/floatl]7th Space: Top sushi restaurant in London, Nobu, is serving the endangered species northern bluefin tuna
A celebrity favourite sushi restaurant in London, Nobu, is serving the endangered species northern bluefin tuna to its 'A' list crowd, Greenpeace DNA testing has exposed. The tests reveal that the endangered species is being routinely served up in all three of Nobu's London restaurants, two of which are Michelin-starred, according to the data analysis contributed by the conservation organisation WWF..."Eating bluefin tuna is as bad as digging into a tiger steak or gorilla burger. It is entirely unacceptable that Nobu, or any restaurant, is serving an endangered species, and it must stop immediately if the species is to be saved from extinction," said Willie Mackenzie, Greenpeace UK Oceans Campaigner. Nobu is behind the times in responding to the desperate state of threatened fish stocks that are dwindling due to overfishing. Star chef Gordon Ramsay said he would remove bluefin tuna from menus at his restaurants in Chelsea and Claridge's, and popular sushi restaurant Moshi Moshi have stopped serving bluefin in direct response to the critical situation of tuna stocks in the Mediterranean. Even the prestigious London Sushi Awards, the world's only sushi championship, have taken bluefin off the menu this year...more...

Japan has announced it will embark on a new bluefin tuna research program...

First findings in...

Apparently the bluefin tuna has on average less fat diposits then in the past, and thus is attributed to their decline, and global warming.

So they will up their quota in order to get more accurate information.

Seriously, as a seafood lover I feel that I will only have a few years left before it becomes too unsafe and expensive to eat them. Farmed fish, especially salmon, has gram-per-gram the highest concentration of antibiotics of any farmed animal, in order to keep the fish somewhat healthy since they are forced to swim in their own poop inside small pens. Farmed fish also has much highly concentrations of PCBs, dioxin, and other cancer-causing contaminants than fish caught in the wild.

Maybe in the near future, better fish farming practices, including larger pens, can be use. Maybe hunks of cloned seafood tissue cultures can be grown in factories in a few years. Either way, I am not too optimistic.

Although I am receptive of new agricultural and bio technology including genetic engineering, the fact is in recent history, only the cheapest means is always used, and other technological means for healthier and more nutritious food ends up being discarded.
