Wheatgrass Juice. Yes, really.

Postby Cyka UchuuJin » Mon Sep 08, 2008 3:44 am

Since I've been at home in Kenya this month, I've 'discovered' the stuff. And while it tastes less than pleasant (but a helluva lot better than natto, that's for sure), it's had amazing benefits, mostly digestive, which has been a problem since day 1 for me in Japan (want more TMI, i can happily provide! :p )

so of course looking online, it says japanese have been drinking it for years, they've perfected it into powder form, blah blah blah. i've asked everyone i know there where to find it in osaka, and i've gotten the 'never heard of it'. one blog i found calls it 'Aiojiru', but it seems like that mixed with another grass.

What I want is to know where I can go to get a daily shooter of it, and where to buy the seeds and juicer so I can grow it in my apartment and juice my own.

Anyone?

Aojiru - is probably the closest thing to it.
Tastes just as bitter. Don't no if it's as good - the Japanese tend to think anything that tastes like arse must be good for you.
Try it - and see how it goes.
I broke a mirror this morning, which means I should be getting 7 years of bad luck - but my lawyer says he can get me 5.

My wife drinks Aojiru nightly. I've had it too on occasion. I'm not really sure of it's benefits, but maybe I will find out when I die prematurely and my wife lives to be 100.

I had a shot of wheat grass once at a Jamba Juice in San Francisco. Put me in some fucked up mental state, probably a panic attack. Since then I have never gone back to Jamba Juice or had a straight shot of wheat grass.

You can also try, although different:

I had a girlfriend that insisted I try wheatgrass.

She is now my ex-girlfriend.

i often wonder if you ever have anything useful to contribute, charles.

pheyton and bolt-krank, thank you. i've been looking more in that aiojiru stuff, but it seems to be barley grass or a blend of something. i want the real deal. the sencha shot looks like green tea, and that stuff makes me way too wired. i know the japanese are the masters of bottling all kinds of health stuff, but i am dead set on getting the stuff that's freshly squeezed. i already drink ukon no chikara before i go out drinking and the weird jelly things in little packets before running and salads from am/pm that come in boxes. i need my existance in japan to have one small element of being just plain raw (and sushi/sashimi doesn't really count, because even then i have to go spend a fortune for really really fresh) and natural. and i ain't talkin about onsens either! ;)

the farm here in kenya that grows the stuff i've been drinking will sell me the seeds, but then there's the question of will i get into trouble at customs bringing them in.

Just start to babble to customs about having impacted bowels. I brought in cilantro seeds (in the orginal pack) and they didn't have a problem. I've also mailed other seeds (legal stuff) to my address in Japan, when I was back in the US and they are now green stuff not doing so well on the patio.
Have done many wheatgrass shots in my life mainly from Jamba Juice in the US, and last colonoscopy was must-see-TV.

Aojiru actually is kale juice. Kale is supposed to be highly nutritious and, turned into liquid form, its health benefits are supposedly concentrated. It also tastes like ass.

wheatgrass doesn't taste THAT bad, guys! it reminds me of the stuff that i fed my pet rabbits as a kid.

kale is healthy, yes. people in kenya eat lots of it to keep the ugali (the closest thing i can think of is very, very densely packed cornbread) from blocking up the digestive system.

wheatgrass is pretty much pure chlorophil (sp?) and other than the digestive assistance it's provided, it's been a fantastic and much needed help in a few health areas that i'll keep to myself.

iraria, thanks for commenting on bringing seeds in. i figure the worst they could do is just take them away. i have a stopover in dubai though, that might be a problem. i've never tried ordering seeds, but i do order some medications via the post and haven't ever had a problem receiving them.

does anyone know what the kanji or kana is for 'wheatgrass'??

Hey, whatever floats your boat, but likening it to rabbit food hardly qualifies as an enthusiastic testimonial to its taste! :D

i've got the seeds here to bring with me, and should they take them away, that company that I listed above has the seeds (although i'm not sure how japanised they've been in processing) in some little prefecture.

thank you very much for the kind offer though!

(i thought you were in japan, no?)

How much would you pay for good health? Wait, don't answer that! There's more. If you order now, we 'll include this handsome set of steak knives, absolutely free. Forged in the Samurai tradition from the fires of Mt. Taro Aso, these steak knives compliment any dinner set, and they are so tough that a stoned Russian sumo wrestler couldn't even break them. Now, how much would you pay.......

arrived back in japlandia last night with 2kg of seeds in my suitcase, didn't have a problem.

however, in my absence, a copy of 'burst high times' (no, i am not a subscriber...they interviewed some of my friends who did a piercing and suspension show in january) was mistakenly delivered to my 150 year old neighbour, complete with back page of people smoking pot (and bonus centrefold of crack smoking). i fear i might now have a bit of a problem when i put my wheatgrass pots out on my front doorstep to get the afternoon sun.

i didn't exactly want 2kg of it, but the guy at home insisted i needed that much for the 5 weeks that i'm here. sometimes it's just better not to argue. and they didn't cost very much at all.
